“Run-DMC” leads talent-rich Utes

August 6, 2003
There is a new attitude swirling inside the U basketball team-an attitude stemming from a trio of sophomores who will make a huge impact not only during this season, but in the next few years as well. As the season draws nearer, Tim Drisdom, Richard Chaney and Bryant Markson find themselves in a situation where they have to pay big dividends, considering the losses the Utes took with the graduations of Britton Johnsen and Trace Caton, as well as Mark Jackson's abrupt departure.

Johnson, Warfield lead Meyer’s new attack

August 6, 2003
When Marty Johnson went down with a knee injury late in the Utes' Sept. 7 win over Indiana, the rushing attack of the U football team looked sunk. And, for a couple of weeks afterward, it was. It wasn't until a Sept. 28 meeting with Air Force that the Utes finally began to move the ball on the ground again.

Netters will have new look in ’04

The men's tennis season may be a few months away, but U coach F.D. Robbins has quite a task on his hands. While the Utes ended the 2003 regular season on a high note, it was hardly a banner year for the team. The Utes finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak, shutting out Portland State, Weber State and Montana to go into the Mountain West Tournament with a load of momentum.

Young coach, Utes turning corner

Last season was U women's tennis coach Megan Payne-Dorny's first year on the job, yet this is the year she believes the program will finally get the fresh start it needs. After a mass exodus of players, for various reasons, Dorny was only left with three returning players.

Utes hit for three years’ probation

By and August 6, 2003
Repeated violations of NCAA rules have put the U athletics program in quite a bind. The NCAA brought down its ruling on July 30, placing Utah on three years' probation after an extensive investigation regarding numerous infractions, most of which are considerably minor.

Elliott, Utes officially in spotlight

August 6, 2003
When the Utah women advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tourney and took on national power Duke on national television, a lot of people took notice. The Utes obviously caught the attention of womenscollegehoops.com, one of the country's most respected women's basketball resources.

Skiers out to win 2nd straight title

August 6, 2003
Winning the NCAA skiing championship last year came as a bit of a surprise even to U skiing coach Kevin Sweeney, who, by his own admission, is always pretty optimistic about his team's chances. In previous years, the team had been in contention, and had come close on a few occasions.

Behind Turner, Utah looks strong

August 6, 2003
A season that started with promise ended with a sputter early last December. The U volleyball team, back-to back champions of the Mountain West tournament, was swept out of the NCAA tournament by the underdog Texas A&M Aggies in the heart of Southern California, bringing a quiet close to a season of adversity and bittersweet success.

Service learning’s magnitude on campus

By By Marshall Welch August 6, 2003
Just a few years ago, I found myself in the position that many people on campus find themselves in when asked about service learning. As a faculty member in the College of Education at the time, my response was, "Oh yeah, we do that-we have internships." It took working with a student from the Bennion Community Service Center on a service learning project to teach me what service learning is not.

Demoralizing effects of pay raises

By By RuthAnne Frost August 6, 2003
Last January, Bernie Machen described budget cuts at the U as "demoralizing." On July 17, a friend and I went down to the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program office to pick up applications for Fall Semester mini-grants. These grants are available to undergraduate biology majors who wish to work on a research project in conjunction with a professor.
