U.S. Soccer Draws 20K at Rice-Eccles

The 2003 Women's World Cup is coming to the United States, and, if Saturday's exhibition game in Salt Lake City was any indication of things to come, the U.S. Women's National Team and its fans are ready for the games to begin. The U.S. squad, led by a lethal combination of crafty veterans and rising young talent, dominated the Republic of Ireland 5-0 in front of a crowd of 19,584 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Hard Times for Man in OSH; Charges Pending

A man was detained in Orson Spencer Hall after allegedly exposing himself repeatedly while in a state of sexual arousal. U Police were called, but the man was released after the complainant asked for time to think about whether or not to press charges. SUPERVISOR ASKS EMPLOYEE TO STAY, KIND OF A U employee called police and reported he had been assaulted by his supervisor.

U Summer Construction Heavy Due to ’02 Olympics

The Union Loop is toast. It may seem to some at the U that construction is especially heavy this summer. Each year during the summer, Campus Design and Construction repairs the roads and parking lots. Last year, there were no road or parking lot repairs due to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Prof Wins Hope Award

It's a first. Wealthy and powerful people like Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, news anchor Dick Nourse and billionaire John Huntsman are typical recipients of the Utah American Cancer Society's highest honor, the Sword of Hope Award. The award, given to honor exceptional contributions to fighting cancer, is also given to physicians known for giving outstanding patient care.

Polls Indicate: Americans Blame Iraq for Everything

A sizeable chunk of the American public has no idea what they're talking about, according to a recent poll. I suspected as much, but it's nice to see it on paper. One-third of Americans polled believe U.S. forces found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Former ASUU Assembly Reps Drop Appeal, Leave 2003-04 Budget Intact

Student government leaders who feared they wouldn't have a budget can rest assured. Aaron Titus and Jeff Neu, both past Assembly members who had appealed the passage of the annual Associated Students of the University of Utah's budget, have withdrawn the appeal from ASUU Supreme Court review.

Bookstore Employee Busted for Stealing $142K

A U Bookstore employee was charged with embezzling more than $142,000 from the bookstore over a period of two years. Stacy Williams, an accounting specialist supervisor, admitted that she changed daily receipts and took the cash. Bookstore management noticed the theft when, in a routine internal audit performed every five years, it became apparent that the daily receipts did not match month-end totals, said Randy Van Dyke, director of internal audits at the U.
