Supercomputer Aids In Atom Research at U

By connecting more than 64 computers together into a supercomputer, U associate professor of materials science and engineering Feng Liu proved a microscope could capture images of atoms and their "wings." His study was recently accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters journal and will help scientists better understand the bonds between atoms, which can aid in the development of stronger materials and machines.

U Researcher Analyzes Cycles of Borrowing and Spending in America

One might wonder why anyone would borrow money if he or she had sufficient savings. A new study at the U probes the reasons why people would engage in this seemingly contradictory behavior. The study was conducted by associate instructor Heather Spencer of family and consumer studies, as part of her master's thesis, and Jessie Fan, associate professor in the same department.

U.N. Security Council Lifts Ban on ‘Blood Diamonds’ in Africa

UNITED NATIONS-The U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to end a ban on the export of so-called "blood diamonds" from Sierra Leone because of government efforts to control the diamond industry. Russia's U.N. Ambassador Sergey Lavrov, the current council president, said after a closed-door council meeting that members agreed not to extend the ban, which expired at midnight Wednesday.

As we all know, we have been in a drought here in Utah for the past few years. To fight this lack of water, state and local government officials have pushed for water conservation. According to the Utah state government Web site for water conservation, Utah is the second- driest state in the nation, only receiving an average of 13 inches of precipitation a year-yet Utah is second in the nation in water consumption.

A Utah Ute at the U.S. Open? U sophomore golfer Nick Micek had quite a day on May 12, shooting a 2-under-par 70 at the U.S. Open local qualifying tournament, becoming one of just four golfers to post a winning score. Micek will be taking his game to the sectional qualifying this week, where he has a chance to earn a spot in the U.
