Printer Worker Sentenced for Stealing Pages of ‘Harry Potter’

LONDON-A printing plant worker was sentenced Wednesday to 180 hours of community service for stealing pages from the forthcoming Harry Potter novel. Donald Parfitt, a forklift operator at Clays Ltd. in Bungay, located in eastern England, pleaded guilty last month to taking the pages of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which will be published June 21.

House Approves Ban on All Partial-Birth Abortions in U.S.

ASUU Attempts to Increase International Involvement

Student leaders are trying to bridge the gap between international students after years of minimal communication. One of the goals of the 2003-2004 Associated Students of the University of Utah's administration was to help international students feel involved on campus and to help with issues such as housing and visas.

Mario Capecchi’s Research Lands Him International Recognition: Italy, Israel

Renowned U geneticist Mario Capecchi is back in Utah after recently returning from award ceremonies in Italy and Israel. He went to Trento, Italy, last month to receive an $81,000 cash prize for the Pezcoller-AACR Award. Capecchi, co-chair of the department of human genetics at the U, has received numerous awards for his gene-targeting research in mice.

Students who are startled when they overhear conversations in Swahili in the Union can breathe a sigh of relief: It's only some of the U's many international students speaking in their native tongue. In the 2001-2002 academic year, Utah ranked second out of six mountain states in the number of international students it welcomed.

Pride Day Invites U Student Participation

Along with the thousands of expected participants in this weekend's annual Pride Day festivities, one U center is hoping to have a strong student presence. Charles Milne, director of the U's Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, wants as many U students as possible-regardless of sexual orientation-to stand on a U pride float in this Sunday's parade.

Utah senior Kim Turner has been selected for USA Volleyball's A2 national training program along with teammates Kelsie Kartchner and Lyndsey Henderson. The three, along with 16 other players from across the country, will train and compete with some of the country's best in Lake Placid, N.

U Mission and Goals Set for Next 5 Years

The U's roles and missions are set for at least five years, along with the other nine public institutions for higher education. In the first major change to its policy in nearly 10 years the Utah State Board of Regents voted on May 30 to pass a categorical list of roles and missions under which all of Utah's public institutions fall.

Regents Approve New U Program

There will be a new major available to U students next fall, thanks to an exception made by the Utah State Board of Regents. On May 30, the Regents met in Salt Lake City and passed a policy to allow the U, and other public institutions of higher education, to create new programs and majors under certain guidelines.
