Students Give Input on U Development

Students and community members got a chance to participate in the U's Long Range Development Plan on May 28 along with administrators, in the first of a series of meetings to discuss the issue. The workshops are a way for students and the public to engage in the process of long-term development at the U.

U Research Aids Quake Prediction

Even though scientists have tried to predict earthquakes for hundreds of years, it might be a waste of time, according to U geology research associate professor Craig Forster. The reason for predictions is to minimize fatalities and loss of property. But, Forster says, "predicting earthquakes is like searching for the Holy Grail.

Editor: Last week, in an article about an ASUU appeal I am co-sponsoring, I was quoted as saying that [former ASUU Vice President] Randall Lloyd "stacked the deck to pass his agenda." Though the appeal I am participating in formally accuses last year's ASUU vice president of illegally passing legislation during last year's final Assembly session, it is inappropriate for me to impugn his motives or character.

Last Thursday, Governor Mike Leavitt visited Timpanogos Academy, one of 13 charter schools in Utah, excited to congratulate parents, teachers and students on a successful first year. Long a supporter of charter schools, Governor Leavitt touted their apparent benefits, including smaller class sizes, greater teacher accountability and more meaningful parental involvement.

Law College, Medical School Host Their Commencements

Another batch of lawyers and doctors are ready to take to the streets of Utah, or perhaps even elsewhere. The College of Law and School of Medicine's annual graduation ceremonies were held on May 24. The medical school's commencement speech was given by Elizabeth Allen, a faculty member who spoke about "being diagnosed with cancer and how it changed her view of practicing medicine and interacting with patients," according to Phil Sahm, spokesman for health sciences.

I hope Marnie Holz doesn't make it to her prom this year. And I hope Naomi Valas won't take another case like this ever again. You see, Holz was one of the dozens of senior girls who participated in that brutal hazing incident on May 4 outside of Chicago as part of an annual rite of passage, where senior girls initiate junior girls.
