Letter to the Editor: The Meaning of ‘Sexual Minority’ Explained

By , , , and March 4, 2003
Editor: The assertions made in The Chronicle's Feb. 27 editorial, "What the Heck is a 'sexual minority?'" are unfounded and incorrect. To begin, The Chrony asks, "what exactly is a sexual minority?" Here is the definition: A sexual minority is a person of a sexual orientation that is not part of the majority, i.

The Good, the Bad, and the @#$% Irritating: It’s About Time To Sit Down And Shut Up

By , , , and March 4, 2003
Today, I will attempt to express three years of frustration in one sentence: Classroom etiquette at the U sucks--There! I've often wondered how otherwise well-educated people can have so little social sense--I guess we don't offer a class in respect. Consider this a start.

U Film Department Emphasizes Substance OVER Glamour

The big, white letters in all the movies spell the same word: H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D. Glitz, glamour and egotistical directors abound in the city where dreams are made and reputations are broken daily. In a town notorious for its short memory and attention span, impersonality is just a word that comes with the territory.

Letter to the Editor: Trisha Beck Tells Her Side of Story

By , , , and March 3, 2003
Editor: Last fall, when the U's political science department asked me to fill a teaching position as an adjunct professor, I was glad to be able to share my practical experience of 18-plus years on Capitol Hill, both as an unpaid lobbyist and as a three-term member of the state House of Representatives.

Letter to the Editor: Why Not Heterosexual Week?

By , , , and February 28, 2003
Editor: When I arrived at school on Monday, Feb. 24, I found out that it was "Sexual Minority Week." I really don't know what that is, I guess it could be anything from homosexuals to Michael Jackson. But that isn't why I am writing this. While I fully support diversity and people's right to do pretty much whatever they want, I feel a little left out when it comes to the university celebrating things that I am affiliated with.

to geek his Own: Visiting the Big Apple and Former ASUU President

By , , , and February 28, 2003
New York is buried in snow, but in my opinion, there's never a bad time to visit the Big Apple. Old friends, great food and endless lists of entertainment are just a few of the many reasons to go back. I was so enthralled while walking the streets that I didn't even notice it was four degrees.

Grievance Hearing Leaves Some Hurting

By , , , and February 27, 2003
In the second grievance hearing of the year, the Progression Party fought three grievances filed against them while the Summit Party battled one. In all, a total of $185 in fines were handed down by the elections committee for various infractions, ranging from inappropriate solicitation of party material to the illicit use of Latter-day Saint Student Association equipment to produce a campaign video.

Re-Examining Civic Virtue and Hate Crimes

By , , , and February 27, 2003
Salt Lake City Democratic Rep. David Litvack's hate crimes bill, which was debated Tuesday in the state House of Representatives, raises an important question: Can the law consider criminals' motivations in deciding the seriousness of crimes? The bill would raise penalties by one class--from a third-degree to a first-degree felony, for example--for threats or acts of violence or vandalism against people based on their race, religion, ethnic background or sexual orientation.

Letter to the Editor: There’s No Nutrition in a Big Mac

By , , , and February 27, 2003
Editor: I am writing in response to Jasyn Jones' Feb. 26 Chronicle Opinion Column, "The Big Mac: A Weapon of Conquest?" In many countries, the Big Mac is a novelty item that is therefore sold at far higher prices than comparable local fare. In those situations, the Big Mac is not as, Jones suggests, cheap food.
