In a Jan. 15 speech at the Union, Evelyn Hu-DeHart, the director of Brown University's Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, gave several justifications for her support of affirmative action. She said it reverses historical wrongs, helps underprivileged students, ensures diversity and empowers minorities to serve their racial and ethnic communities.

Connecting Through Communication

U adviser Jeff Pollock was in a plane waiting for passengers to finish boarding when an attractive woman sat down in the seat next to him. She smiled at him, and he smiled back, then turned his attention elsewhere. After a moment, the woman turned toward Pollock and said, "Is it hot in here or is it just me?" Being able to read her lips, but unaware of its implications, Pollock wondered if the woman was flirting with him or if she meant her words literally.

By and January 22, 2003
Editor: I am writing in response to Natalie Horton's Jan. 21 letter, "Mormon Race Panel Story Poorly Done" that criticized a Jan. 15 Chronicle article. I would like to take issue with the governing philosophy that seems to drive Horton's letter. That is the philosophy that Mormons can't possibly be in good standing if they express opinions that criticize the status quo or history of popular Mormon opinion.
