Letter to the Editor: Mormon Race Panel Story Poorly Done

Editor: In reading the Jan. 15 article "Mormons Discuss Racial Inequality," I became quite confused. I am an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I'm white. Were those panelists all members of the LDS Church? Were they all in good standing? If they are all currently faithful members of the church, were their comments taken out of context? I don't think that any active member of the church would ever attack the church or its leadership in this way.

Editor: The truth is that anti-smoking advertisements are misleading and inappropriate. I am not a smoker, but several times I have considered taking up smoking as a protest against the anti-smoking campaign. Lately my annoyance has turned to anger. How is a nation atoned of past and current sins by simply declaring that attitudes toward certain minorities have changed and that we should forget about it and move on? After UCLA broke the 23-year Ute home winning streak last week, Utah came back and defeated BYU on Friday night, 196.800-194.700. "We started a new streak tonight," U gymnast Melissa Vituj said. BYU hung tough throughout the contest, but could not overcome an excellent Ute performance.

Registration for WinterFest Open Until January 31

The U's annual winter celebration will hit the Union Patio on Feb. 6. "Fire and Ice: Winterfest 2003" will feature complimentary cider, coffee and cocoa and will allow student teams to compete in ice sculpture competitions. "Winterfest is a great way for diverse individuals and organizations on campus to come together to have fun in the spirit of competition," said Winterfest Chairman Frank Chacon in a recent statement.
