People are Always Nice to the Inured

By , , , and November 19, 2002
I really wish all of you reading this column could see me right now writing it?one hand in a splint that goes up to my elbow, the other typing in old-school hunt-and-peck style, which, let me tell you, is pretty speedy. This splint, by the way, has completely immobilized my thumb?a condition quite possibly the most annoying thing I have ever experienced.

SALT LAKE CITY?Judge Michael McConnell has promised to "reflect a Utah perspective" from his new perch on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They do judge all gay men and all atheists. Scout officials insist that gay men and atheists are immoral and unfit to lead, for no other reason than their sexual preference or religious beliefs.

May I remind him that Chris Cannon's unopposed campaign in Utah's 3rd Congressional District is not the fault of the GOP or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Moving Beyond the Stereotypes of Homelessness

By and November 18, 2002
When I think of the words hungry and homeless I think of Steve. He was a friend of mine. A truck driver around 50 years old, he ended up in a Salt Lake City homeless shelter due to a combination of life tragedies. Steve didn't fit the standard stereotypes.

Sawyer Addresses Problems Of Landmines in Afghanistan

By and November 18, 2002
When Deb Sawyer was in Afghanistan over the summer, she thought of grape plants. "The grape plant is very resilient?if the plant is damaged, the root remains and can be replanted and nurtured. Afghanistan is the same way. It can recover and survive, but it needs nurturing and support," Sawyer said.
