A new study says pollution from industrial nations was one of the possible causes of a devastating African famine that left 1.2 million people dead. The starvation brought on by the 1970-85 drought stretched from Senegal to Ethiopia until rains finally returned.

Letter to the Editor: God is All Over Government

Bush Stops $34M for Int’l Family Planning

WASHINGTON?The Bush administration, in a victory for social conservatives who oppose abortion, will withhold $34 million that had been earmarked for U.N. family planning programs overseas. Instead, the money will go to international child survival and health programs of the U.

Union Hires a New Assistant Director

After an academic year of budget cuts and layoffs, the Union is hiring an assistant director. Frank Chacon, from the University of Southern Colorado, will take charge of marketing, recreation and programming on July 30. "Programming is just central to what we do as the community center of the campus, and we need to beef it up," said Whit Hollis, Union director.

Illegal Meds Threaten UT Immigrants’ Lives

A large number of Utah's Latino immigrants are risking their lives by taking an illegal pain reliever, U doctors say. Up to 35 percent of the Latino patients seen at the U's South Main Public Health Center use the drug. A Latino boy, brought to a U clinic with a severe infection in May, led doctors to discover the widespread use.
