Letter to the Editor: Niang Deserves Campus’ Respect

Editor: I would like to respond to "Comments Offend Some LDS Students" in the April 10, 2002 edition of The Chronicle, in which some students who belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said they felt that they had been accused of racism by association.

Golfers Drop To Last in Final Day of MWCs

Though the U golf team moved up two spots to a tie for fifth place after two days of competition at the Mountain West Conference Golf Championships in Sunriver, Ore., the Utes dropped to eighth and last place in yesterday's final day of competition. After the second round of competition, the Utes pulled themselves even with San Diego State at 590 team strokes, while pulling ahead of Colorado State (592) and Wyoming (593).

Utes Host Last Place, Troublesome Lobos

Hosting the team that resides in the cellar of the conference may sound like the ideal situation for the U baseball team. However, the New Mexico Lobos are that team, and they had the Utes number in the first week of the conference season. The Lobos were able to completely blow away the Utes in all three games of the slugfest series by scores of 13-9, 20-11 and 13-12.

Majerus Can’t Boot Players If They Leave

Losing three scholarship players in a single offseason, each with significant amounts of eligibility remaining, normally would not be cause for alarm for the U men's basketball team. After all, one need only remember the yearly exodus of throwaway athletes named Jordie McTavish, Ben Heusser, David Jackson, Tyler Johnston, Trent Whiting, Gary Colbert, Jon Carlisle, Kevin Bradley, Jon Godfread and Mike Puzey to recognize that esteemed coach Rick Majerus has a long and storied history of discarding those he belatedly realizes are not of the quality level he had anticipated.

Four U men's basketball players with limited roles in the 2001-02 season?sophomore Lance Allred, freshman Eric Osmundson, redshirt Cameron Goettsche and walk-on Chris Huber?all decided to vacate the program in a matter of weeks of each other, leaving only five active team members to return for the 2002-03 season.

Men’s Hoops Team Adds Aussie Recruit

The U men's basketball team has gone Down Under to fill its final scholarship spot for the 2002-03 season. Coach Rick Majerus announced yesterday that Andrew Bogut, a 6-foot-9 forward/center that played for the Australian Institute of Sports, will become the latest Ute.

Two Utes Earn NCAA Reward

A pair of U student-athletes have parlayed their tremendous success both in the field of competition and in the classroom into $5,000 post-graduate scholarships from the NCAA. Shannon Bowles, a member of the gymnastics team, and Teren Jameson, a runner for the cross country and track teams, were among the 58 winter sports athletes selected for the awards from throughout the nation.

But how many college students have actually known what it means to go hungry? The answer is not many.
