Impact Edges Its Way Into Office

Bill Edwards and Randall Lloyd were relieved, grateful and screaming when they found out they won the election. The two leaders of the Impact Party were mobbed by supporters when Josh Walker, elections registrar, read the numbers. The Impact Party received 1,350 votes and Elevation earned 1,294.

SALT LAKE CITY?The Salt Lake Organizing Committee is donating $4 million worth of appliances, fixtures, furniture and other items to Utah charities. SLOC officials launched the giveaway Wednesday at a Salt Lake senior housing complex where they delivered beds and kitchen appliances to low income residents.

PROVO?The state Board of Education is considering revisions in the core curriculum that would require high school students spend more time in social studies courses. Carolee Coleman, state social studies specialist, said the revisions also would make the curriculum more specific.

Van Crash Kills 5 From Day Care

MEMPHIS, Tenn.?A driver lost control of a day-care van on an interstate and crashed Thursday, killing the driver and four children and critically injuring two other youngsters. The van, which belonged to Tippy Toes Learning Academy, crashed about four miles from the day care center.

Bush Sends Powell to Aid Middle East

WASHINGTON?In a new push for peace, President Bush demanded that Israel pull back its troops from Palestinian cities it occupied in recent days and called on Arab nations to do more to crack down on terrorists Thursday. He ordered Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region to carry the message.

Afghanistan Fights Opium Production

ANKARA, Turkey?Afghanistan's Interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai welcomed Turkey's plans to take over command of the international peacekeeping force and said Thursday the two countries would also cooperate in the fight against the production of opium. Karzai arrived in Turkey as his government pledged to end the cultivation of poppies, a major source of income in Afghanistan and a huge problem for Turkey?where most of the opium is smuggled through.
