Issues of Money: Pimps, Cupcakes and Mac’s Boobs

November 13, 2001
I'm not destitute by any means, and I certainly don't mean to trivialize the plight of those who find themselves in enough economic hardship that they're forced to flip a borrowed quarter just to decide which bill to pay this month, but? As a college student (that should say enough, but I'll continue anyway) who works long hours for less money than the tip Bill Gates gives the cabana boy for bringing him a margarita, I know a little about poor.

Volleyball Exceeded Its Own Expectations

November 13, 2001
Coming into the season, University of Utah volleyball coach Beth Launiere was not expecting the type of success the team has had thus far, finishing its pre-MWC Tournament schedule at 19-5 overall, and placing second in the conference at 11-3. "If you told me that we would only have five losses at the end of the season, I would be very surprised, and very happy," Launiere said.

As a precaution against possible contamination, the College of Health closed its pool in the HPER complex Monday morning. This came as a result of a swimming class student who reported possibly having been infected with a parasite called cryptosporidium. The parasite causes cramping, abdominal pain and watery diarrhea, said Michele Johnson, assistant director of the University of Utah's Environmental Health and Safety department There is nothing wrong with the U's water, said College of Health Dean John Dunn, but the student may have contaminated it.

U Accelerates Its Emergency Plans

November 13, 2001
When Marty Shaub started her career in Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Utah in 1988, the department was little known and underutilized. Called the Department of Public Safety then, it reported to campus police. With emergency management on everyone's minds now, the department's role has risen in prominence from just overseeing worker safety and environment protection.

Olympics Motivated by Economic Need

November 13, 2001
Kenneth Bullock considers his father-in-law, a former heavy- weight boxer, the epitome of an Olympic athlete. Motivated to compete by pride in his country and personal performance, this man embodied ideals that comprise only part of the story. A Deseret News headline proclaiming "Tax Tips For Games Can Boost Profits" tells a little more, according to Bullock.
