Freshman Council Calls for Applications

A student government council is trying to make starting college less disorienting and frightening for incoming freshmen. The Associated Students of the University of Utah's Freshman Council is accepting applications until Aug. 29. "The council allows students to get involved on campus, make life-long friends and it serves as a stepping stone into ASUU elected positions," said Mondi Basmenji, council adviser and former council member.

A surgeon and author who describes himself as a "village doc" from Big Piney, Wyo., shared his thoughts on medicine with the U School of Medicine's Class of 2006 at the annual White Coat Ceremony on Friday. William Close, 78, who is in his 50th year of medical practice, delivered the keynote address in Kingsbury Hall.

Residency Changes Not Harmful to U

While other state schools say the change in residency requirements will cost them millions this year, U officials announced the flagship institution may escaped unscathed. During the Legislative Session last March, lawmakers passed House Bill 331 which increased residency requirements, forcing out-of-state students to pay higher non-resident tuition longer.

Swiss University Welcomes U Students
