Palestine Presents New Security Plan

By , , and June 4, 2002
RAMALLAH, West Bank?Responding to growing U.S. pressure to fight terror, Yasser Arafat presented CIA Director George Tenet with a plan Tuesday for restructuring the unwieldy Palestinian security apparatus. The Palestinian leader appointed a 73-year-old general to head the new security array, but Israel said the proposed changes are largely cosmetic because Arafat, who has done little to rein in militants in the past, remains in charge.

"It's like taking the pieces from four or five jigsaw puzzles without pictures on them and trying to figure out which ones fit together."

The Playoffs Intensify My Lakers Hatred

June 4, 2002
It's official?I hate the Lakers. This year's playoffs have hardened my hatred for the team that donned the last two championship rings, and with the win on Sunday, will probably complete a three peat. Every single player on that team makes my blood boil. Shaquille O'Neal is the big blob in the middle who never leaves the key (I think three seconds was called twice in Sunday's game, although O'Neal had pitched a tent in the paint).

Machen Gets National Support

June 4, 2002
President Bernie Machen's defense of the U's no-gun policy has attracted the attention and support of the American Council on Education. In late May, the council announced plans to file a friend of the court brief with the U.S. District Court, claiming the U has a right to ban guns under the constitution that defends freedom of speech and the right to maintain a safe environment.

UTA Removes Trees to Make Room for TRAX

By By Chi-Chi Zhang June 4, 2002
Today there are 140 stumps across campus where, only two weeks ago, large trees stood. Crews have been removing the trees along South Campus Drive, Wasatch Drive and Medical Drive to make elbow room for construction of the TRAX extension that will run from the stadium to the U Hospital.

Dumping Nuclear Garbage in Nevada Is a Waste

June 4, 2002
Last Memorial Day, as I drove along U.S. Highway 93 on my way to McGill, the small northern Nevada town where I was born, I made a special effort to look around at the rugged desert scenery. Sometimes called "the loneliest road in America," Highway 93 and the isolated sagebrush covered hills surrounding it have become, for me, synonymous with home, family and friends.

Osimani is Fifth Ute to Leave

June 4, 2002
Add another name to the list of the departed from the U men's basketball team. Martin Osimani, a back-up point guard during the 2001 02 season who expected to contend for the starting job his sophomore season, became the fifth Ute to leave the team when he announced last week his plans to depart the U program.

Burgess Gets Invite to NBA Draft Camp

June 4, 2002
When the top pro basketball prospects tied up their shoes at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp starting June 4 in Chicago, Ill., a Ute was among them. Former U center Chris Burgess, who led the 2001-02 Utes in points (13.2) and rebounds (7.2) before he went down with a season-ending torn ligament injury December 29, 2001, was one of the "60 best [prospects] in the world" invited to the camp, he said.
