Gov’t Wiretap Warrants Down From Last Year

WASHINGTON?The government requested and won approval of fewer warrants last year for secret wiretaps and searches of suspected terrorists and spies, attributing a slight decline to streamlined procedures that became law after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The government received court approval for 934 of the secret warrants, down from 1,003 in 2000.

Mormon Massacre Document a Fake

SALT LAKE CITY?A document discovered earlier this year that blamed Brigham Young for the 1857 massacre of 120 Arkansas emigrants is a fake, according to a forensics examiner. The sheet of lead was engraved with words purportedly written by John D. Lee, the man held accountable for the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

Musharraf Likely To Win Presidency

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan?Military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf appeared heading toward an overwhelming victory Tuesday as Pakistanis voted in a referendum to give him five more years as president. With 429,780 votes counted, 345,427 ballots supported extending Musharraf's term.

First Class of Future Occupational Therapists Graduates This Month

The U's Occupational Therapy (OT) program, the only such program in the state, is set to graduate its first class this month. Occupational therapists work with people who face challenges in accomplishing many things they want or need to do in life. The word "occupation" in occupational therapy refers to everything that occupies individuals?brushing their teeth, driving their cars, opening cans and managing businesses.

Bartender’s Stunt Burns 9 Students

IOWA CITY, Iowa?A bartender is accused of recklessness for setting fire to a high-proof grain alcohol at a downtown club, burning nine University of Iowa students standing nearby. Troy David Kline was charged with misdemeanor reckless use of fire for his April 19 bar stunt.

Saudi Arabia Airs New Ad Campaign

NEW YORK?Saudi Arabia is spending millions on a television ad campaign aimed at bolstering its image with Americans, but at least one cable channel is declining to run the spots. The ads began running last week, coinciding with the U.S. visit of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah, who met with President Bush at his ranch in Texas.

Bad Record Doesn’t Equal a Bad Team

The U softball team started out with a pretty bad record. Prior to the Mountain West Conference regular season, the Utes posted an 8-26 record. That's a .235 winning percentage. To give you an idea of how poor that record is, the worst teams in the NBA this year were the Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors, as they both finished with 21-61 records.
