In a time when the United States is still feeling the after-effects of Sept. 11 and Middle East tensions erupt into mass violence, the Holocaust can seem far away. Letter to the Editor: Living With Racism Everyday

Editor: Regarding the article "Comments Offend Some LDS Students." I feel the students involved are going to the extreme with their reaction to the comment. The whole point of a diversity class is to expose and teach people about different ethnic groups. Personally, I find it disturbing that the students were only able to name four African-Americans in the hierarchy, and I find it even more disturbing that African Americans have only been in allowed in the hierarchy since 1978.

Letter to the Editor: Listening to All Sides of the TA Debate

Editor: A debate rages over an incident that took place on March 27 in an African American Studies class. The details, listed in an article in the April 10 issue of The Chronicle, represented two sides of a somewhat convoluted story. From what I read in the paper, the two sides are "a majority of the students" and the teacher's assistant for this class, Amadou Niang.

Letter to the Editor: Call for Personal Accountability

Editor: In reading Mr. Canham's article regarding Amadou Niang's classroom comments on institutionalized racism, I am compassionate toward the angered students. It is indeed uncomfortable to evaluate one's potential contribution to racist structures. However, I call for the students involved to refrain from complete externalization of their woes and to accept a degree of personal accountability for their reaction.
