U Softball Readies for Cougars

By and April 10, 2002
The break was short from Mountain West Conference play and not as productive as it could have been, as the U softball team split with Southern Utah last Wednesday. But all that is irrelevant as the Utes get back to conference play with BYU tomorrow. The Cougars are 24-16 (3-5 MWC) and are coming off a game against Utah State yesterday.

The Chronicle’s View: New Computer Policy A Double-Edged Sword

By and April 10, 2002
There are five student computer labs on campus, but oddly enough, U students must often endure exceedingly long waits to utilize them. It's not because every student on the hill is clamoring to use one?it's just that those who do are increasingly forced to compete with the local high schoolers and others who get to them first.

Letter to the Editor: Call for Personal Accountability

Editor: In reading Mr. Canham's article regarding Amadou Niang's classroom comments on institutionalized racism, I am compassionate toward the angered students. It is indeed uncomfortable to evaluate one's potential contribution to racist structures. However, I call for the students involved to refrain from complete externalization of their woes and to accept a degree of personal accountability for their reaction.

Letter to the Editor: Listening to All Sides of the TA Debate

Editor: A debate rages over an incident that took place on March 27 in an African American Studies class. The details, listed in an article in the April 10 issue of The Chronicle, represented two sides of a somewhat convoluted story. From what I read in the paper, the two sides are "a majority of the students" and the teacher's assistant for this class, Amadou Niang.

Letter to the Editor: Living With Racism Everyday

Editor: Regarding the article "Comments Offend Some LDS Students." I feel the students involved are going to the extreme with their reaction to the comment. The whole point of a diversity class is to expose and teach people about different ethnic groups. Personally, I find it disturbing that the students were only able to name four African-Americans in the hierarchy, and I find it even more disturbing that African Americans have only been in allowed in the hierarchy since 1978.

Want to Get Chipped? Consider This

By and April 10, 2002
"Mom, I want to be the first kid implanted with the chip." Sound like something from Star Trek? Think again. They were the first words that came out of 12-year-old Derek Jacobs' mouth after watching a "Today Show" segment on the rapidly emerging technology called the VeriChip.

SALT LAKE CITY?Two supporters of the plan to store used nuclear fuel on Utah's Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indian Reservation met with The Associated Press on Wednesday to tell their side of the story. Private Fuel Storage, a group of nuclear utilities, is now seeking a license from federal regulators.

Women Netters Host Southern Utah, BYU

By , , and April 10, 2002
The in-state war will begin for the U women's tennis team this weekend, as BYU and Southern Utah head north to match up against the Utes. Utah is 8-11 overall, and 2-4 in Mountain West Conference play, while BYU is 8-12 overall, and 3-3 in conference play.
