Letter to the Editor: Education Is Weapon Against Ignorance and Hate

Editor: I am writing in response to Mike Chidester's March 15 opinion column "Some Lessons Better Learned at Home." While I appreciate his point about not pushing certain points of view on people who do not want to hear them, I think his analysis of the situation is seriously narrow-minded and extremely one-sided.

Letter to the Editor: Golf Course Conundrum

Editor: At a time when tuition is being raised at unprecedented rates, it is now that students must evaluate what they are getting for their money. This is especially important for out-of-state students who are going to have to pay a large premium to go to school here (assuming they stay around long enough to pay the new tuition rates).

Columbia Bombing Kills at Least 12

VILLAVICENCIO, Colombia?A car bomb exploded in a provincial capital of Colombia Sunday, killing 12 people, wounding dozens and stoking fears that Colombia's civil war is becoming one of indiscriminate terrorist attacks. A small explosive device had gone off minutes earlier, attracting people who were in surrounding bars and restaurants.

Fighting Spreads to Nalbus, Jenin

NABLUS, West Bank?Israeli troops fought fierce battles with Palestinians in the West Bank on Sunday, encountering stiff resistance in the crowded Jenin refugee camp and in the winding alleyways of Nablus' Old City. At least 14 Palestinians were killed in Nablus, where dead bodies were sprawled along the streets on the 10th day of Israel's offensive to weed out militants staging deadly terror attacks on its civilians.

Americans Protest in Favor of Israel

NEW YORK?Thousands of demonstrators filled a city block near the United Nations building on Sunday to support Israel in its military offensive in the West Bank. This weekend people from both sides of the conflict went to the streets protesting nationwide. In Boston, about 3,000 people gathered downtown Sunday for a "Stand with Israel" rally.

SALT LAKE CITY?As sexual abuse allegations surface against Catholic priests nationwide, Mormon President Gordon B. Hinckley denounced child abuse among members of his faith. "It is a most despicable and tragic and terrible thing," Hinckley said at the faith's 172nd semiannual General Conference.

Reporter Charged Over Diesel Story

SALT LAKE CITY?A staff writer for the Deseret News who reported on a diesel fuel spill at his building has been charged with failing to notify the city fire department about the spill. City prosecutors charged Jerry Spangler with a misdemeanor violation of the state's "unauthorized discharges" law.

Men Lose, But Rebound Vs. AFA

This time, the road was half way kind to the U men's tennis team. The Utes opened Mountain West Conference play this past weekend in Albuquerque, N.M., against New Mexico and Air Force. Versus New Mexico, the Utes lost a close match, 4 3, but then bounced back to beat Air Force 6-1.
