Officials: Troops Likely To Stay in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON?American troops will stay indefinitely in Afghanistan as local power struggles and remaining al Qaeda make it impossible to set a withdrawal deadline, defense officials say. The U.S. troops will help train an Afghan army in addition to searching for al Qaeda fighters, and may also intervene to keep violent warlords apart.

Dudley Moore Dies, 66, Of Brain Illness

TRENTON, N.J.?Dudley Moore, the cuddly little Englishman who portrayed a lovably forlorn drunk in "Arthur," died Wednesday of complications from a rare and incurable brain disorder. He was 66. The comic actor died at a friend's home in Plainfield of pneumonia stemming from progressive supranuclear palsy, which is similar to Parkinson's disease and affects one of every 100,000 people.

Plant Malfunction Burns 4 Workers

ATHENS, Ala.?Four electricians were badly burned after a high-voltage breaker at the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant malfunctioned, officials said. No radioactivity was released in Tuesday's incident, which left four men with burns and other unspecified injuries.

Bomber Kills 15 on Jewish Passover

NETANYA, Israel?A suicide bomber burst into a hotel dining room and blew himself up Wednesday just as Israelis dressed in their holiday best were sitting down to a Seder meal celebrating the Jewish Passover. At least 15 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded.

Football Team Adds Another Recruit

7.5 Million Offered for Canal Accident

RIVERDALE?The Davis and Weber Counties Canal Co. has settled a lawsuit by Riverdale homeowners who were flooded by the canal's breach three years ago for $7.5 million. Individual checks to 61 homeowners ranged from $10,000 to $400,000, depending on the damage incurred, said plaintiffs' attorney Dick Burbidge of Salt Lake City.

AT&T Dismissed from Trib Suit

SALT LAKE CITY?A federal judge has dismissed AT&T Corp. as a defendant in a lawsuit over ownership of The Salt Lake Tribune. AT&T sold The Tribune to MediaNews in January 2001. Salt Lake Tribune Publishing Co. sued to reverse the sale, accusing AT&T of conspiring with the Deseret News and MediaNews to deprive Tribune Publishing of its option to buy The Tribune next August.
