Caucus Helps Women Lawyers in School

Melissa Bean has a friend in law school who recently had a child. Many people automatically assumed the woman should drop out to care for the child full time. "[She] got a lot of flack for having a kid," said Bean, a second year law student at the U and the president of the Women's Law Caucus.

Lighty Awarded for Efforts to Recruit Women

The 2002 Linda K. Amos Award for Distinguished Service to Women will be presented to JoAnn S. Lighty, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering, later this week. Gerald Stringfellow, dean of the College of Engineering, thinks Lighty is deserving of the honor.

Architecture Criticized for Lack of Women

When the Graduate School of Architecture was up for re accreditation in July, the team assessing the school found the greatest deficiency in the area of social equity. "The current faculty composition does not reflect women in positions of stature and responsibility," the report from the National Architectural Accrediting Board said.

School of Computing Enrolls Fewer Women that Average

Being one of a few women in a classroom of 100 students can be uncomfortable, according to Chris Johnson, a professor of computer science. The discussion titled, "(Self-) Righteous Babes: The Border Creep of Western Feminism," was held Tuesday in the Union.

Gov. Makes Road to Residency Longer

To the disappointment of students leaders state wide, Gov. Mike Leavitt signed a bill that makes residency harder to achieve Tuesday. Since the state Legislature passed the bill early in March, advocates of higher education have worried about House Bill 331.

Kappa Sigmas Will Stay in House Untill Semester’s End

The U's chapter of Kappa Sigma has been officially disbanded for at least two years. "We felt that the chapter was not making appropriate progress toward our values and standards," said Kappa Sigma International executive director Mitchell Wilson. A chapter is a local affiliate of a national fraternity or sorority.

Women’s Studies Dept. Becomes Gender Studies

As of next fall, women's studies at the U officially becomes gender studies?catching up with the more inclusive and progressive material it teaches, according to Associate Director Debra Burrington. The department anticipates the change will make some men more comfortable taking its courses, she said.

Int’l Women Face College Challenges

Each year the U welcomes to our campus more than 1,800 international students from more than 100 different countries. Nearly half of those students are women who hail from countries like Costa Rica and China where educational opportunities for men and women are nearly equal, and countries like Nepal and Morocco with basic literacy rates for women at 20 percent and 35 percent respectively.
