After praying and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the Republican caucus for Utah precinct 2394 began in the apartment of a U student. Fourth-year medical student Jeff Anderson posted flyers days ago notifying residents of the East Village, a married student housing complex, he would host a caucus meeting Monday.

Gas Leak Found, Elderly Evacuate

SALT LAKE CITY?A gas leak at a Sandy home for the elderly resulted in the evacuation of 134 residents. Early Tuesday morning, Sandy Fire Department responded to the emergency call at Sandy Regional Convalescence Center. The residents of the facility and those in an adjoining rehabilitation clinic were evacuated to a recreation center.

Bar Association Oks Lies, Deceit

SALT LAKE CITY?The Utah Bar Association has decided that government lawyers aren't violating ethics rules when they participate in undercover investigations that involve lying. In an advisory opinion released last week, the Bar Association said the deceit rule doesn't apply to government lawyers who are involved in lawful undercover operations.

Israeli Refuses to Let Arafat Attend Summit

JERUSALEM?Yasser Arafat decided Tuesday not to attend a key Arab summit, and his Cabinet accused Israel of trying to "blackmail" the Palestinian leader with tough conditions for letting him go. Arafat's absence could undermine Arab support for the Saudi peace plans in Beirut.

Bush Selects New Surgeon General

WASHINGTON?President Bush selected an Arizona trauma surgeon and sheriff's deputy to be surgeon general and a top administrator at Johns Hopkins University to direct the National Institutes of Health, Tuesday. Richard Carmona of Tucson and Hopkins' Elias Zerhouni must be confirmed by the Senate before filling the two top health positions.

Kabul Earthquake Kills 1,800 Afghans

KABUL, Afghanistan?An earthquake devastated mountain villages in northern Afghanistan, where officials on Tuesday estimated at least 1,800 people died and thousands more were injured in a region already hard-hit by hunger, drought and war. The military commander from the Baglan region said the Monday night quake collapsed 20,000 mud-brick houses.

Retired Sheriff Shoots Self, Kids

MERCED, Calif.?A retired sheriff's deputy shot and killed his 5-year-old daughter and his three stepchildren Tuesday, before committing suicide with the body of one of the youngsters in his arms. John Hogan, 49, had apparently entered the house after his wife had set out on her morning walk, authorities said.
