With four individuals gearing up their campaigns to succeed him, now seems as apt a time as any to assess the performance of incumbent ASUU President Ben Lowe. Whether fair or not, the hallmark of any Associated Students of the University of Utah administration seems to be the annual fight against the state Legislature in attempting to keep U students' tuition from increasing too drastically.

Letter to the Editor: Utah’s Welcome Mats Are Gone

Editor: All over town are marquees and banners loudly proclaiming "Salt Lake City Welcomes the World." How friendly, how appreciative this city was, and, oh, how they celebrated the diversity of those out-of-town neighbors during the month long "We-Love-Non-Utahns Just-As-Much-Or-Even-More Than-Utahns" fest.

Cheney Tour Ends With Weak Support

ANKARA, Turkey?Vice President Dick Cheney ended an 11-nation Mideast tour Wednesday by promising Turkey financial aid for peacekeeping in Afghanistan. Cheney said he hoped Turkey would agree to lead the force, now being run by Britain. But he failed to win the key NATO ally's support for a tougher policy against neighbor Iraq.

Forces Release Afghans Thought to be Iranians

WASHINGTON?American forces in Afghanistan are releasing 43 prisoners, most of them mistakenly thought to be al Qaeda or Taliban fighters, the Pentagon said Wednesday. Twelve prisoners were released after being held for two weeks on suspicion they were Iranians trying to destabilize the interim Afghan government.

Top Ecstacy Dealer Receives Sentence

SALT LAKE CITY?Joshua Christensen was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for possession of the drug Ecstasy with intent to distribute. Christensen was originally charged with selling 500 tablets of the mood-enhancing drug to an undercover federal agent.

News Companies Sue Gov. Leavitt

SALT LAKE CITY?Four news organizations have sued Gov. Mike Leavitt, contending he is illegally destroying his email. The suit filed Tuesday in Third District Court contends Leavitt's deletion of electronic documents violates the Government Records Access and Management Act and Utah's Uniform Electronic Transmissions Act and amounts to "destroying public records.

Former U President Alfred Emery Dies

Former U president and emeritus law professor Alfred Emery died Sunday, March 17. He was 83 and had been hospitalized for nearly three weeks. "The university, after my mother, was his second love," said Gary Emery, his son and a supervisor in the U's General Accounting office.

U Might Offer ‘Unique’ International Studies Degree

When in Rome, do as the Romans do and earn credit toward your degree at the same time. Starting next year, U students may have the opportunity to earn a degree which would require students to have experiences abroad. The U Undergraduate Council approved the international studies major and minor proposal Monday.
