Al Qaeda Hide, Plan Comeback in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan?Protected by sympathetic clerics, up to 1,000 Taliban and al Qaeda leaders are hiding in Pakistan and planning a Taliban comeback in Afghanistan, according to Taliban members and others familiar with the Islamic movement. Most of the exiles?including some of the best-known figures in the Islamic militia?live quietly in Pakistan's lawless frontier region, protected by tribal leaders of their own Pashtun ethnic group in an area where the central government's authority is limited.

Officers Find Mob Victims in Lake

MELONES, Calif.?Authorities have recovered the bodies of three men believed dumped by the mob in a deep lake, and searched for more corpses on Tuesday. Two bodies were pulled Sunday from beneath a bridge in New Melones Lake, a reservoir in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Oldest Women Dies at 115 Years of Age

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.?Maud Farris-Luse, recognized last year by the Guinness World Records book as the world's oldest living person, has died. She was 115. She died Monday from complications of pneumonia at Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater, a town south of Grand Rapids in southwestern Michigan.

SALT LAKE CITY?The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has offered to supervise a new election for the bitterly divided Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians as the tribe makes plans to store tons of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. The bureau normally intervenes in tribal affairs only when invited, but the Goshute controversy could complicate important issues facing the tribe, authorities said.
