Baseball Swept in MWC Start by NM

By , , and March 18, 2002
Apparently, sweeping an opponent with just one win on the season and a five-percent victory rate is precious little preparation for the beginning of the conference season. Or so it must seem, anyway, for the U baseball team. Just removed from an utter annihilation of in-state rival Southern Utah, the Utes saw the buzzsaw turned on themselves this past weekend, as they were swept by MWC foe New Mexico in Albuquerque, losing 13-9, 20-11 and 13-12, respectively.

Golfers Headed to San Diego

By , , and March 18, 2002
Better late than never. A week after it was originally supposed to, the U golf team will finally participate in the San Diego Invitational. After last competing at the John Burns Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Feb. 22, where they finished in 13th place among the 20 competing teams, with a three-round total of 891?some 38 shots behind the winning pace set by San Diego State?the Utes were eager to return to action last Monday, when the SD Invite was scheduled to take place.

U’s Women Netters Get Weekend Spilt

By , , and March 18, 2002
Beating the teams it is supposed to beat, and losing to the teams it is supposed to lose to has been what the U women's tennis team has done just about all season long. Nothing changed this weekend, as the Utes split their matches against Rice and TCU. The Utes barely defeated the Rice Owls, 4-3.

Letter to the Editor: Machen Should Stick to the System

Editor: Imagine for a moment if all the leaders of our state's institutions thought like U President Bernie Machen: Utah State University's president could ban women who live on campus from having more than one child, in the name of protecting the school from over-population; Weber State's president could ban all motorized vehicles, in the name of cleaning up the environment; Southern Utah University's president could decide the Clean Air Act is stupid and mandate that smoking is OK at SUU because students need more freedom of choice.

Letter to the Editor: Please Save Our Station

Editor: K-UTE has a long history of service to the U going back to 1988. Unfortunately, some Associated Students of the University of Utah representatives do not think that the approximately 29 cents per student, per semester that funds student radio annually is a worthwhile investment.

Police Report: Reckless Driver Runs Off Road, Hits Sign, Eludes Police

By , , and March 18, 2002
Reckless driver?A man was driving recklessly on campus, a woman reported to the police. He was driving all over the road, she said, and he even drove off the road and hit a street sign. She didn't get his license plate and the alleged reckless driver left the area before the police arrived.

Higher Tuition Rates Are No One’s Fault

By , , and March 18, 2002
When the Olympic break ended a few weeks ago, U students found themselves confronting the usual hum drum concerns: Midterms, neglected reading, imminent term papers. They also found a slightly more disturbing problem: A 9.3 percent tuition hike. The increase, announced a few weeks ago by President Bernie Machen, will mean that average U students will pay $284 more per year than before.

Letter to the Editor: Unfair Way to Raise Money

Editor: I am writing on behalf of many soon-to-be resident students at the University of Utah. Most of us came to Utah last summer in pursuit of a higher education at the university. We have been working hard on obtaining residency for the last year. Now, changes in the residency requirements have not gone over well with us.
