U Illuminati Celebrate Founding of University

For Founders Day?the U's birthday?the university honored community members for their support and contributions. The U, founded in 1850, turned 152 on Feb. 28. However, the Alumni Association postponed Founders Day activities because of the Olympics. "I think that the events we have hosted would be acceptable to the founders to postpone our celebration," said U President Bernie Machen at Wednesday evening's Founders Day celebration at the Grand America Hotel.

New Fuel Proposal Rejected in Senate

WASHINGTON?The Senate rejected tough, new automobile fuel economy requirements Wednesday amid sharp disagreement over safety and whether the standard would ban families from SUVs and minivans. A provision that would have required automakers to increase their fleet-wide gasoline economy to 36 miles per gallon by 2015, an increase of about 50 percent from current rules, came under sharp attack as a threat to the U.

Doctor’s Indigence Questioned in Case

FARMINGTON?Prosecutors want psychiatrist Robert Weitzel to prove his indigence, now that he has rehired a private attorney to help defend him against manslaughter and negligent homicide charges in the deaths of five elderly patients. Weitzel is accused of causing the deaths at Davis Hospital and Medical Center's geriatric psychiatric unit in 1995.

Men’s Tennis Lose Pair in Cali

The U men's tennis team, coming off three straight wins at home took, off to California to do battle with the University of San Diego and the No. 4-ranked USC Trojans. It didn't go as well as the Utes had hoped, as they came home with two losses. Against San Diego on Monday afternoon, the team lost a close match, 4-3.

Baseball’s Offense is Coming Together

Just about everything has started to gel for the U baseball team, as it has won four games in a row now to improve to 12-8, and is completely demolishing the competition. Even though Utah was facing a team last weekend that had only won one game (Southern Utah), many of the things U coach Tim Esmay wanted to happen, did happen.
