U Sponsoring Conference for Small Businesses

The U Engineering Experiment Station is sponsoring a conference on small businesses and inventions to aid in their commercialization this week. The conference is aimed at new inventors in small businesses, and will include representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Institute of Health for both panel discussions and one-on-one meetings with guests in attendance.

Utahns Lesss Likely to Die From Pollution

PROVO?Utahns have roughly a 4 percent less chance of dying from lung cancer due to air pollution than the national average, according to a study published Wednesday. The study, led by Arden Pope, a Brigham Young University professor and environmental economics specialist, found minuscule particles of pollutants emitted by automobiles, power plants and factories significantly increase the risk of dying from lung cancer.

Columbia U Appeals Feb. Pro-Unionization Ruling

NEW YORK?Columbia University appealed the Feb. 11 ruling by the regional director of the National Labor Relations Board that teaching and research assistants at Columbia are employees of the university who are entitled to union representation. In a Wednesday press release, the university requested that the board review and reverse the New York University decision that set a precedent for teacher assistant and research assistant unionization at private universities "as an unwarranted reversal of nearly 30 years of board precedent.
