ASUU Plans to Recognize Superior Teaching

Students have an opportunity to recognize teachers who have influenced them for good. Students can nominate teachers for a student choice award by picking up an application at the Associated Students of the University of Utah main office in Union Room 234.

President Bernie Machen often touts the importance of diversity at the U, but quantifying the effects of diversity can be difficult?a campus center is attempting to change that. The Center for the Study of Race and Diversity in Higher Education first started Spring Semester 2001, researching the effects of diversity.

Rapist Sentenced to Maximum Time

SALT LAKE CITY?The 23 year-old man who pleaded guilty to charges of raping and stabbing a 13-year-old girl and then leaving her for dead near Jordanelle Reservoir, was sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison. Jonathan Fuentes had pleaded guilty to first-degree felony counts of attempted aggravated murder and child kidnapping, and to second degree felony sexual abuse of a child.

Ill Shit on the Rise in Utah

While many Olympics visitors were worried about the availability of alcohol in Utah, most fears were quenched when travelers arrived to find that Utahns also share the world's love for all types of ill shit. Such pastimes as drinking, smoking, drug use and lusting were rampant in Utah in February, and it doesn't look like the trend will slow down any time soon.

Explosives Found on Elem. Student

WASHINGTON, Utah?A boy who brought explosives to his elementary school has been suspended for several days. On Thursday, the boy began showing off small bombs he fashioned from the shells of a .22-caliber bullet at recess. Washington County Sheriff Kirk Smith said Thursday the small explosive devices would be harmful if ignited because of the potential shrapnel.

Officals Respond to Nuclear Report

WASHINGTON?President Bush's top advisers say the United States must be prepared to use nuclear weapons to deter attacks involving weapons of mass destruction. But in an effort to ease alarm overseas, they said there were no plans to do so. "We all want to make the use of weapons of mass destruction less likely,'' national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said Sunday.

ESS Department Adds “NCAA Bracketology” Course

The U's Department of Exercise and Sport Science increased by one its available courses when it announced on Monday that "NCAA Bracketology" would be available to all students. The new addition to the world of academia came about as a result of concern from within the department that, with the likes of "Trail Hiking," "Tae Kwon Do," and "Intermediate Bowling," permeating its course roster, students within the program were not being challenged enough mentally.

Goat Spurs Controversy, Second Lawsuit Against U Theatre Department

The U's theatre department is once again under fire, following a recent lawsuit filed against professors who allegedly forced sophomore Natalie Wallace to engage in "unruly conduct with a goat" for her theatre midterm. The suit, filed Wednesday in the Salt Lake 14th District Court, accuses three professors within the theatre program of forcing Wallace to comply to questionable behavior with the animal for an assigned scene.

Skiers Finish Third at Championships

It wasn't the 11th national championship the Utah ski team sought, but it was an improvement. "We are trying to be optimistic, but there is a definite disappointment in the end result," said ski coach Kevin Sweeney. Utah finished in third place at the NCAA Championships, held March 6 through 9 in Anchorage, Alaska.
