Security Blanket Wrapped Tightly Around Campus

Fences, checkpoints, ID swiping locks and men with guns constitute the security blanket wrapped tightly around the hospital, the village and the stadium for the Games. With the heightened fear of terrorism the last five months have seen, many parts of campus will hide under that blanket as well.

Computer Model Monitors Bioterrorism

A U-developed computer model will help detect possible bioterrorist attacks during the Olympic Games. Using medical records from some of U's clinics, the model can detect disease patterns that resemble a bioterrorist attack. The model retrieves medical data daily and creates reports used to identify an outbreak.

After seeing her U women's basketball team battle back from a 12-point deficit, surge ahead of conference power UNLV, then throw it all away with a bevy of unforced errors in the last two minutes and drop to the break-even mark, she was literally too peeved to even chew her team out in a post-game locker room rant.

Gymnasts Will Now Hit the Road

The U gymnastics team (3-0) does have a fraction of good news as it heads into five straight weeks on the road due to the Olympics?it doesn't have to protect its 167-meet regular season home winning streak. Utah, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will not host a meet in the Huntsman Center until a March 9 outing against Oregon State.

Men's Tennis With competitions in Arizona, Idaho and California during the Olympic Games, the men's tennis team is looking to continue its winning ways. Victories against Montana State and Utah State gives Utah its first two wins of the year and sends the team packing with a perfect record to defend.

Baseball Trying to Fill Roles

February will be very telling for the U baseball team, which will match-up with four different teams during the month. The Utes will face the Arizona Wildcats this weekend, Pacific next weekend, and then Mesa State and Southern Utah to finish off the month.

Olympics Draws Demonstrations to Campus

The Olympic Games are both target and backdrop for protesters this February. On the U campus, activists' plans peak just as the Games commence. For several days prior to Feb. 8, Orson Spencer Hall will host the Global Justice Conference, which culminates on the day of the Opening Ceremony with a march against poverty.

Old Dorms, New Community

Students say they feel a great sense of community in the old residential halls that couldn't be found in the plush rooms and facilities of Heritage Commons. Residential students had to move to the old dorms in January, to give Olympic crews time to transform the dormitories into the athlete's village in time for the Games.
