U Students Create Polygamy Pin

What started as an enterprising and humorous venture has acquired a definite underground overtone. An entrepreneurial group of biology department students and employees came out with their own Olympic pin sometime last year. Referred to as the "Olympic Mormon Polygamy Pin," "Molympics Polygamy Pin," or "Polygamolympics Pin," the contraband souvenir is shaped like the 2002 Winter Games' crystal logo.

Security Blanket Wrapped Tightly Around Campus

Fences, checkpoints, ID swiping locks and men with guns constitute the security blanket wrapped tightly around the hospital, the village and the stadium for the Games. With the heightened fear of terrorism the last five months have seen, many parts of campus will hide under that blanket as well.

U Students to Carry Torch

Many high-profile people, among them President Bush, have carried the torch as it makes its way to Utah. And once it gets to Arches National Park on Feb. 4, prominent Utahns including Karl Malone and Jon Huntsman Sr. will have a chance to add "Olympic Torchbearer" to their long lists of accomplishments.

During the Olympics, some students will travel and others will work?a select few will compete. Torin Koos, a junior majoring in pre-architecture, will compete on the 2002 U.S. Cross Country Ski Team this month. "It's been something I've been working for and thinking about for a long time," Koos said.

Only eight credits away from her degree, one U student will put off the robes of graduation to put on a U.S. Ski Team uniform and compete in the Winter Olympic Games. U senior, Kristina Joder, took only 5 credit hours Fall Semester to concentrate on training.

Students Prepare to be U Ambassadors

For Emily Bell, Spring Semester started before the end of Fall Semester. On Dec. 13, during finals week, she sat in class with 22 other students. That day, the instructor passed out the syllabus, discussed course expectations and the grading policy. The first day of class was like any other first day, but the course title, Leadership Service and the 2002 Olympics, is anything but typical.

Campus Parties to Include Alcohol

Olympic spirits?the liquid form?will flow on campus throughout February. The Union, the Alumni House, the Museum of Fine Arts and Red Butte Garden will serve alcohol at Olympic-related events. "We're allowing things to happen during the break period that obviously won't be allowed during the regular school year," said Wayne McCormack, director of the U's Olympic Coordination Office.

Olympians to Get Job Help From U

As Olympians gear up for competitions and the campus prepares to welcome the world, the School of Business is trying to help athletes after the medals are awarded. The business school is working with the World Olympians Association to help Olympic athletes find jobs after the Games.

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Student Suing Parking Services Gets Lawyer

Upset with the parking situation on campus, student Steve Rinehart decided to sue parking services in early September. In his second year of law school, he planned to represent himself, but he has recently enlisted the help of a local lawyer. Lester Perry, with the Salt Lake law firm of Hoole & King, will represent Rinehart and two other students, Drew Yeates and Aubrey Broome (Perry's daughter), in a class-action lawsuit the three plan to file against the U.

Part of Field House Reserved for Media

If you're not planning to participate in the Winter Games or just leaving town altogether, you might consider working out during February. But exercise options will be more limited than usual because part of the Field House will be reserved for media during the Olympics.
