Chrony Won’t Stop Web Site During Games

While the Olympics will preempt classes and the U will take an extended break, The Chronicle will continue to function. During the Olympic Break, The Chronicle will not produce a print newspaper, but will update its Web site. This site will feature articles about how the Games are affecting campus, updates on U sports teams, letters to the editor and satire articles under the title, The Comical.

Bush Takes Heat for Enron Scandal

WASHINGTON?Vice President Dick Cheney says the Bush administration's refusal to identify business executives who met with him and his aides concerning energy policy probably will end up in court. The head of the General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative arm, will decide this week whether to sue to force the White House to turn over documents on the meetings last year with representatives of energy companies.

Pakistanis Take Reporter Hostage

NEW YORK?A Wall Street Journal reporter has apparently been taken hostage in Pakistan by a group seeking repatriation of detained Pakistani fighters in Cuba and the release of Afghanistan's former ambassador. An email from the National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty accused reporter Daniel Pearl of being an undercover CIA officer, an accusation the newspaper and CIA dismiss.

Legislature: UTA Salaries Too High

SALT LAKE CITY?Legislative leaders claimed Monday that Utah Transit Authority executives' salaries are "grossly out of line with the private sector." House Republicans demanded to know UTA boss John Inglish's yearly salary. If the information is denied, lawmakers may punish the public transit entity.

LAGOS, Nigeria?Rescuers pulled scores of bodies from a canal Monday after a series of explosions at a munitions depot destroyed homes and businesses in Nigeria's commercial capital, witnesses and rescue workers said. Panicked residents ran and drove into the Oke Afa canal as they fled the blasts Sunday evening at the nearby Ikeja military base.
