Sports Get Too Hard When You Get Older

January 15, 2002
It's all because of the yellow and purple jerseys. They were cool. The only team in the NBA that did not wear white unis when playing at home, the Los Angeles Lakers also had the fashion sense to make their road duds purple. As a 5-year-old, I was hooked. Sure, Kareem lofting those skyhooks and Magic running the vaunted fast break before throwing a no-look pass to Worthy for a dunk so high flying I thought he'd never come down were all cool? But mostly, it was the yellow and purple jerseys.

The U women's basketball team's Saturday loss to Colorado State was unusual not only in that it went to triple overtime for the outcome to finally be decided, but also because the Utes lost it in the Huntsman Center. While the Utes certainly are not impervious to defeat at home, especially when taking on the No.

Visiting Zion: An Introduction to the Conflict

By , , and January 14, 2002
Before visiting Israel, when the subject of Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict came up, I generally threw my hands up in the air in defeat, acknowledging how unqualified I was to form an opinion on the subject because of my ignorance. As a hip, avant-garde news editor I wasn't completely ignorant, of course, but the whole situation seems so steeped in history, hatred and politics that you need a doctorate before you can intelligently express an opinion about it.

U.S. Warplanes Pound Terrorist Hideouts

By , , and January 14, 2002
KABUL, Afghanistan?U.S. warplanes pounded terrorist hide-outs in eastern Afghanistan on Monday in bombing raids aimed at striking Osama bin Laden's die hard supporters, and the United Nations called on donor nations to step up aid to rebuild the country. The Zawar region along the border with Pakistan, where al Qaeda and Taliban holdouts are believed to have taken refuge in a complex of mountain caves, has been under air assault for nearly two weeks.

Letter to the Editor: Compromising the Safety of Students

Editor: Once again I see that the powers that be are showing that their degrees far exceed their intelligence. Our distinguished University of Utah President Bernie Machen is a prime example. He can be told that the U's policy towards firearms is in violation of the law.

Some Nerve: Science and Athletics Collide

By , , and January 14, 2002
Here's a piece of Olympic paraphernalia that is sure to make collectors drool: an Olympic ring logo made of nerve cells. Coined the "Living Rings," the logo was made by scientists at the Keck Center for Tissue Engineering, a bioengineering laboratory at the U.
