First International Anthrax Letter Sent to Bern

BERN, Switzerland?A suspected anthrax letter sent to Chile bore a Swiss postmark but may have been mailed from New York, Swiss police said Wednesday. Dr. Antonio Banfi, a pediatrician in Santiago, Chile, received the letter?with a Swiss postmark and a Florida return address?two weeks ago in what may be the first confirmed case of anthrax contaminated mail outside the United States.

Taliban Leader Orders ‘Fight to the Death’

KABUL, Afghanistan?The Taliban's supreme leader radioed his commanders Wednesday and called on them to fight to the death against Americans in southern Afghanistan, where U.S. Marines were building up their forces at a desert base. In Washington, U.S. officials said a small group of soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division has assembled outside the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif to serve as a quick-reaction force in the event of renewed Taliban resistance.

ASUU Hopes to Tie Off Election Loopholes for 2002

A unanimous vote passed the new elections policies and procedures through the General Assembly Tuesday. These policies were hotly debated in the Student Senate, but passed in the Assembly without amendments. The bill makes numerous changes to the elections policy, and student leaders hope that these changes will help make the elections run more smoothly.

Involvement in Diversity Week Hindered by Poor Communication

The Union is celebrating its annual Diversity Week, but don't expect to see many U diversity groups at the festivities or involved in the events. "We wanted to be involved, but because the information was not sent in a timely fashion, we weren't able to participate," said Valerie Green, International Student Services Center adviser.

Students’ Cars Must Move to Clean Lots at Residence Halls

Just as suddenly as the weather changed, so too did plans for the Office of Residential Living and the U Department of Transportation. The large storm over the Thanksgiving break covered most University of Utah parking lots with snow. On Monday, in conjunction with residential living, the transportation department decided to clear out lots at the Heritage Center residential halls, said Assistant Director for Facilities Ted Lazenby.
