Bridge Will Get Skier Statue

On the west side of the nearly completed pedestrian bridge, a statue sits, wrapped in black plastic. University of Utah administrators plan to unveil the copper statue on Dec. 5 during the dedication of the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge. The statue titled, "Go For the Gold" was sculpted by Jonathan Bronson, a Utah artist known for his depictions of western society.

U Still Moving Snow; More Expected

While the Thanksgiving break lasted a few hours longer for students, for others, holiday lounging ended early with cold temperatures and physical labor. Snow removal started shortly after the storm began over the weekend and is still going on. Forecasts hint at more of the white stuff later on this week.

Volleyball Had a Tough Road

Considering the adverse situations the University of Utah volleyball team was facing before the season, who would have thought that the team would have won its first conference title and be hosting NCAA Tournament matches in November? "We have broken so many barriers this year, and the program has come so far," Ute coach Beth Launiere said.

Letter to the Editor: Manipulating Utah’s Olympic Look

Editor: I can just imagine the Jerusalem Olympics, where ham and cheese sandwiches should be within arms reach at every public gathering. At the Calcutta Olympics, large porterhouse steaks should be sold 24-7 at every booth. Birth control pills should be handed out as people go through security at the Rome Olympics.

With University of Utah sports fans' attention attuned to the football team's drive toward a bowl game, and the return of coach Rick Majerus to the men's basketball team, it is no surprise that the volleyball program gets lost in the shuffle. That shouldn't be the case anymore.

WASHINGTON?President Bush on Tuesday turned aside the International Olympic Committee's request for a military truce during the Winter Olympics next year. He will propose a U.N. resolution calling for athletes to travel safely to and from the games. After a meeting, IOC president Jacques Rogge said Bush assured him he would submit the resolution, a tradition for Olympic host nations, to the United Nations on Dec.

Every National Guard Member to Deploy

SALT LAKE CITY?Virtually every member of the Utah National Guard will be wearing fatigues and combat boots when the Winter Games begin in February. Gov. Mike Leavitt announced on Tuesday the activation of 1,900 Utah Guard members to assist with games security?the single largest deployment of the state's Guard force ever.

Teens May Have Planned Massacre

BOSTON?A 17-year-old girl, who authorities say agreed to take part in a Columbine-style massacre at her school but spilled the secret by warning her favorite teacher that the woman was in danger, was charged Tuesday with conspiracy to commit murder. Amy Lee Bowman, who pleaded innocent, is the fourth teenager charged in what authorities say was a plan to smuggle guns under black trench coats into the school and emerge from a bathroom shooting to kill.
