Letter to the Editor: Changing Mentalities About Race

Editor: I think the whole issue of the TA and the offended students has gotten a little blown out of proportion. If the guy violated University of Utah policy then he should have to deal with the consequences of his actions. Whether or not someone was offended doesn't necessarily mean that he did violate university policy, but the evidence that I have seen presented in The Chronicle seems to suggest that he was violating university policy.

Chrony Earns High Marks in Contests

Though The Chronicle has received considerable attention for its involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic village newspapers this year, the paper has also distinguished itself critically. Announced last week, The Chronicle dominated the Utah News Photographers Association Student Photojournalism Competition, taking 12 of the 16 awards in four different categories.

Law Prof and Shurtleff Shoot It Out Over Guns on Campus Debate

Putting his mouth where his litigation is, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff came to campus yesterday to debate the issue of guns on campus with Law Professor John Flynn. Last December, Shurtleff said, as a public university, the U was violating state law by prohibiting students and employees with permits to carry concealed weapons from bringing their guns to campus.

In my two years as a Daily Utah Chronicle sports staffer, I have reported on nearly every type of sport the U sponsors. I have done write-ups for men's basketball, skiing, baseball, golf, men's and women's tennis, football, volleyball?the only ones I can think of never covering are soccer and softball, not yet at least.

Gov. Mike Leavitt has taken numerous trips to Silicon Valley in the past two years trying to lure high-tech companies to Utah. Leavitt, with support from lawmakers, has showered money on engineering programs with the charge that they double the number of engineers and computer science graduates in five years.

Bret Hortin came to the U in search of potential financial services reps. And last Wednesday's foray went pretty well. Hortin, a recruiter with Intermountain Financial Group, found the applicants well qualified. Others tend to "deselect" themselves, he said from a tiny office used for interviews in Career Services.
