Some Athletes Get Away With Murder, Literally

March 3, 2002
Time and time again I see athletes being charged with crimes such as murder or possession of illegal substances, or anything of the criminal nature. And time and time again I see the athletes get away with it just because of their status in society as athletes who are beloved by many fans.

The Chronicle’s View: Tuition Cap is a Reasonable Compromise

By , , and March 3, 2002
The U has three ways of raising money: from tax revenue, from donors and from students. In a recession, when tax revenues are $256 million lower than expected and the dip in the stock market has taken a sizeable chunk out of the pocketbooks of many would-be donors, guess where administrators are going to raid for cash? Ute Track Team Finishes Indoor Season at MWCs

March 3, 2002
Even though the U track and field team had a few great individual performances, the men's and women's teams could not compete at the highest level, as neither of the teams finished in the top half of the competition in the Mountain West Conference Championships.

Gymnasts Get Road Victory Versus BYU

March 3, 2002
For the fifth time in five consecutive road trips, the Utah gymnastics team couldn't avoid counting a fall in one of its four events. Of course, the way the Utes performed Friday night against BYU in Provo, it didn't matter. No. 4 Utah (6-2) had to count a fall on beam?an event in which it ranks No.

For the first time in seven years, the Utah men's basketball team will not bring home at least a share of the conference crown. That distinction belongs to the Wyoming Cowboys. In front of the largest Arena Auditorium crowd ever (16,089), the Utes failed to snap an eight-year losing streak in Laramie, Wyo.

Women Stun UNLV, Prepare for MWCs

March 3, 2002
Though she's played in the shadows of teammates Lauren Beckman and Erin Gibbons all year long, the U women's basketball team is virtually always better when senior forward Lindsay Herbert is playing aggressively and providing a viable third scoring option.

Women Lack Pinache, Still Win

March 1, 2002
The Thursday night matchup between the U and San Diego State women's basketball teams was so ugly, not even a French figure skating judge could give it style points. Pretty or not, though, the Utes will take the 47-45 win they got over the Aztecs. In their second-to-last game of the regular season, the Utes scored their fourth win in their last five games to continue their pre-conference tourney surge, improving to 14-11 overall, 7-6 MWC in the process.

Letter to the Editor: Reflections After Olympic Games

Editor: Bravo!!! This American thanks you for making her so proud. In my 61 years as an Olympics junkie, I can honestly say these were the best. Back in the day, I visited Utah often as a skier. When my friends and I visited, we always chose to stay in Salt Lake City and do day trips to the different resorts.

The Chronicle’s View: Games Left Many Without Fire Within

February 28, 2002
The party ended last weekend leaving some Olympic enthusiasts to deal with the letdown?no more competitions, no more pins, no more crowded city streets. But for others the departure brought relief. For the U community, the Olympic aftermath is a mixed bag of blessings and shortfalls.
