Committee Can’t Agree Where to Cut Ed. Budget

The Higher Education Appropriations Committee presented a slashed budget to the Executive Appropriations Committee Wednesday. After meeting with the education committee for nearly three hours the day before, higher education committee co-chairman Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, presented a budget-cut proposal that did not meet the guidelines asked for.

Utah Residency May Become Harder to Get

Lawmakers want to make it more difficult for out-of-state students to gain residency. For the past few years, the Higher Education Appropriations Committee has discussed changing Utah's lenient residency laws to make sure that students who apply for residency in the state are planning to stay after graduation.

U Still Awaits Payment From SLOC

Lawmakers accepted a check for $99 million from Olympic organizers Tuesday for money local and state governments spent on preparations for the Games and the continuing costs of maintaining athletic venues. The large sum paid so quickly after the Games' end triggered a sigh of relief and gave many tax-payers and lawmakers a feeling of comfort.

Conference Explores Utah Diversity

Diversity in Utah is an issue affecting everyone from elementary students to professors, according to a diversity conference held Monday and Tuesday. The U's Academic Outreach and Continuing Education held the two-day conference to explore the issue of diversity in education.

Olympic Activities Board Still Functioning After the Games

The Olympic Activities Board has worked this year to excite students about the Olympics and provide opportunities for involvement with the Games. Now that the Games are over, the Olympic board will still function, but it will operate as a special projects committee for the Associated Students of the University of Utah.
