Editor: Once again I see that the powers that be are showing that their degrees far exceed their intelligence. Our distinguished University of Utah President Bernie Machen is a prime example. He can be told that the U's policy towards firearms is in violation of the law.

The Zawar region along the border with Pakistan, where al Qaeda and Taliban holdouts are believed to have taken refuge in a complex of mountain caves, has been under air assault for nearly two weeks.

SALT LAKE CITY?Claims by a former chemist at Dugway Proving Ground that the Army retaliated when he revealed safety problems at the chemical-biological warfare research facility are before a U.S. Department of Labor judge. David Hall, of Salt Lake City, first brought the complaints in 1997, contending the Army punished him after he complained to state and federal regulators about how Dugway handled its chemicals and tested for contamination.

Before visiting Israel, when the subject of Israel or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict came up, I generally threw my hands up in the air in defeat, acknowledging how unqualified I was to form an opinion on the subject because of my ignorance. As a hip, avant-garde news editor I wasn't completely ignorant, of course, but the whole situation seems so steeped in history, hatred and politics that you need a doctorate before you can intelligently express an opinion about it.

Pugsley to Replace Allen as Senior Class President

The former president of a large sorority will now preside over the senior class. Clara Pugsley, who recently finished her term as president of Kappa Kappa Gamma, will replace AnnMarie Allen as senior class president. The senior class president is responsible for planning graduation and related events, selecting a class gift, overseeing the Freshmen Council and working with the Student Alumni Association.
