Elisabeth Wilkinson lost her job as an appeals officer for the University of Utah Parking Services in early December. Such an event would not normally warrant newsworthiness except that Wilkinson said she was fired unfairly for talking to the news media about a "corrupt" incident that happened at Parking Services.

Editor: I was amused and yet disturbed by the Jan. 4 letter to the editor in The Daily Utah Chronicle, "Mormon Influences Rooted in Heritage," written by Bart Gatrell. Gatrell begins his campaign with a cry for understanding, stating that we are inaccurate when we make claims that there is not an overabundance of Mormon influence here at the University of Utah.

The Student Green Party thought it found the perfect place to make a statement about the Olympics. The strip of grass near Carlson Hall laid out the perfect course for a mock Olympic torch run. According to the Greens' plans, a six-pack of Coke, a Happymeal, running shoes and other products would weigh down an activist-torchbearer.

Former Ute skier and current exercise and sport science/ environmental studies major Pat Casey was one such athlete. "Having the Olympics factored into my decision to come to the U," he said.

Meanwhile, many others, like the U students who'd acclimated themselves to living in the new dorms, found displacement foisted upon them, as they were forced to vacate their residences to make way for incoming athletes from around the world.
