Bush, Abdullah Discuss Mideast

CRAWFORD, Texas?Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah met for two hours Thursday with President Bush at his Texas ranch, looking to ease growing tensions between their two nations that loomed over a summit originally meant to advance the Mideast peace process. A Saudi spokesman said the crown prince was not softening his demand to Bush that the United States pressure Israel to halt its current military action.

Bioterrorism Threats Discussed in Senate

WASHINGTON?Biological terrorism remains a serious threat to America, Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., warned Thursday. "The risk is real. The risk is increasing. Our vulnerability remains high," Frist said at a briefing in an office building closed for months following last fall's anthrax-by-mail attack.

Wildfires Grow in Colorado Foothills

BAILEY, Colo.?A 2,400-acre wildfire sent thick smoke across wooded foothills southwest of Denver on Thursday as fire fighters labored in cooler weather to protect hundreds of homes. Cloud cover, lighter winds and lower temperatures provided relief for about 250 fire fighters building lines around the blaze.

Teen Sentenced for Drag-Race Death

SALT LAKE CITY?An 18-year-old man may stay behind bars until he is 21 for his role in the death of a boy during a drag race. Kimble Smith was sentenced Wednesday for the August accident that killed Craig Warburton, 13. Smith was driving in a drag race with his friend when his car spun off the road at about 80 mph and crashed into a group of boys, killing Warburton.

Building Explodes In New York City

NEW YORK?An explosion rocked a 10-story commercial building Thursday, spraying glass and rubble across a quiet block and injuring up to 50 people, authorities said. Several victims, at least three in serious condition, were taken to four Manhattan hospitals for treatment.

Women Netters Shut-Out by Y At MWC Tourney

The first day of the Mountain West Conference Tournament is over, and the U women's tennis team did not get off to a good start, as it was blanked by in-state rival BYU 5-0. The Utes could not get anything going against the host Cougars, as they were not able to win one singles or doubles match all afternoon.

Three More Reasons Why ASUU Sucks

Thursday's epic matchup at the Huntsman Center, pitting the U's student government against its student newspaper in a gruesome, bloody battle royale (a.k.a. basketball) was never fair to begin with. The participants from the Associated Students of the University of Utah were, on the whole, bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than their Daily Utah Chronicle counterparts.

Baseball Goes On Road for SDSU Matchup

This will be the most critical weekend of the season for the U baseball team, as it will travel to face conference leader San Diego State. The Utes must do well in order to compete for the second-place spot in the MWC. The Aztecs have been on fire, as they took four games from BYU last weekend to give themselves space in the conference race, and will look to bring out the brooms again against Utah.

Letter to the Editor: Stop Complaining, Start Participating

Editor: I can't tell you how many times I've heard my fellow classmates whine like kicked mules (no offense to the Student Organization for Animal Rights) about the policies and procedures of the university. I also could not tell you how many times I've heard these same peers come up with refreshingly new and exciting ideas for change and improvement.
