Cardinals Release Abuse Statement

VATICAN CITY?American cardinals and top bishops expressed regret Wednesday for failing to prevent the sex abuse scandal that has engulfed the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. The statement came in a letter to American priests released as church leaders and top Vatican officials in a marathon session worked on a final statement with guidelines on how to deal with sexual abuse by the clergy.

Earthquake Hits Central Balkans

GNJILANE, Yugoslavia?An earthquake jolted parts of the central Balkans on Wednesday, knocking down a minaret and killing one man. Sixty other people were injured, a U.N. spokesman said. The quake's preliminary magnitude was measured at 5.1, with its epicenter some 175 miles south of Belgrade, near the town of Vitina in the southern province of Kosovo, said Slavica Radulovic of the Seismological Institute of Serbia.

2nd Space Tourist Cleared for Trip

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fl.?Another rich adventure-seeker is headed to the international space station. This time, though, the astronauts on board won't have to baby-sit him. To the relief of the three men living on the space station, NASA has given its blessing to the visit by South African millionaire Mark Shuttleworth, who is part of a crew of cosmonauts due to lift off aboard a Russian rocket Thursday from Kazakhstan.

U Donates Land Near Stadium For Olympic Cauldron Fountain

Olympic and U officials announced the creation of an Olympic Cauldron Park to be built on the southwest corner of Rice-Eccles Stadium on Wednesday. The park would showcase the 72-foot tall cauldron built which held the Olympic and Paralympic flame for the duration of the 2002 Games.

Business School Strives for Diversity

After donating $200 to the U chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Business School Dean Jack Brittain addressed the group about diversifying campus Wednesday. "I'm humbled to be here because we are not doing enough to diversify our school," he said to the 15 members present.

U Committees Need Stronger Student Voices

Student representatives sit on many committees formed to govern the U, but some appointed students fail to attend the meetings and neglect their responsibilities. The U has 59 committees responsible for overseeing everything from campus health to student behavior, and 30 of these committees have students sitting on them.

Two Killed Inside Bethlehem Church

BETHLEHEM, West Bank?Two Palestinians inside the Church of the Nativity compound were shot Wednesday and one of them died as Israeli and Palestinian negotiators gathered next door for a second round of talks to end the standoff at one of Christianity's holiest sites.

Group Criticizes ASUU Senate’s K-UTE Decision

The Student Broadcast Council, K-UTE and concerned students believe the Student Senate's decision to cut K-UTE's umbilical cord to ASUU was unconstitutional. They filed a complaint with the Supreme Court of the Associated Students of the University of Utah Wednesday, following last week's decision which drastically decreased the station's operation budget.

Sept. 11 Suspect Found Not Guilty in Britain

LONDON?The extradition case against an Algerian pilot once described by U.S. authorities as a trainer for the Sept. 11 hijackers fell apart Wednesday when a British judge ruled the United States had not provided sufficient evidence the man was involved in terrorism?or had committed any crime.

Letter to the Editor: Questioning Religious Correctness

Editor: There has been a lot of fuss about Mr. Niang's classroom conduct, and I think that many who have written letters in his defense have missed the mark. One such response admitted that "[He] asks students if they are LDS. Students voluntarily raise their hands.
