Softball Sweeps Close Series With BYU

Melissa Stahnke can claim a new nickname: "Cougar Killer." With back-to-back home runs, one in the bottom of the eighth inning, Stahnke led the U softball team to a comeback, eighth-inning 8-7 win over BYU in the second game of the doubleheader, completing the two-game sweep of the Cougars.

Women Netters Split In-State Meets

It was one of the most critical weekends in conference play for the U women's tennis team, as it matched up against two in state rivals, BYU and Southern Utah University. Defeating BYU would have put a dent in the conference standings, with a large U imprinted on it, as Utah would move up in a tie for fourth place with BYU before the Mountain West Conference Championships However, losing leads and not finishing matches has plagued the Utes all season, and the cure could not come soon enough, as the Utes gave up many leads and eventually lost to the Cougars 5-2.

Baseball Moves Up MWC With Wins Over AFA

The one thing the U baseball team had not done throughout the entire season was to sweep a three-game series. Until now. Before the series with Air Force, the Utes were tied for third place with the Falcons, with a conference record of 5 7. Utah needed to separate itself from the rest of the pack.

To compensate for an $11 million cut to the U's budget, administrators agreed to take a bigger hit than academic programs. Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dave Pershing agreed to have the U administration take a 5.7 percent cut, while programs and departments take a 4.

Disability Center Holds 1st Awards Ceremony

To honor faculty and students who have helped accommodate disabled students on campus, the Center for Disability Services held its first annual awards luncheon Friday. "We wanted to support faculty and students in what they do to accommodate disabled students' needs," said Olga Nadeau, director of the center.
