The U is hosting its first drive for the National Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization. The drive seeks to register those willing to donate bone marrow if they are found to be a match in the future.

People caught texting on their cell phones while driving will soon face stiffer penalties under a law passed by the Utah Legislature.

Administrators and students pleaded for lawmakers to show mercy, and in January, state legislators lowered the initially proposed budget cut of 19 percent down to 17.5 percent. Then, the $23 million stimulus package shrunk it further to a tamer 9 percent, ultimately translating to a loss of $24 million in state funding for next year.

Sending the masses wandering through campus and into traffic jams could end in tragedy in future emergencies. The U needs to get serious on developing a plan that goes beyond "every man for himself."

Replacing grass with urban gardens, a simple task, could potentially inspire other changes on campus and within the city. It could serve as an example of what can be done when we think beyond societal norms that we have accepted as the only way to improve the areas we live, work and go to school in.

The U and other universities should maintain some funding for creative writing programs, even though they're facing budget cuts. We should fight to foster this skill as the vehicle for self-actualization and as a record of who we really are.
