Villano: Removing a piece of Utah golf history

Stepping into the clubhouse at the U's executive golf course, I expected nothing more than the worst golf course in Utah. Wow, was I completely wrong. I headed in under that assumption not only because it's an executive golf course, and before my recent inaugural round I had never played a mediocre-at-best executive golf course, but also because the U is planning to build parking lots and buildings over part of it.

Public donations up, contrary to earlier report

A report showing an $18 million decrease in donations from public foundations and associations may be wrong, U administrators said. The April Monthly Gift Comparison Report, a summary of private support for the U, showed a drop in public donations compared to last year.

U track team shines at Nationals in more ways than one

Realistically speaking, the two track athletes representing Utah at the NCAA track championships had little opportunity of winning a medal, so they decided to earn the respect of the Utes' biggest rival instead. In the wake of a tragic car accident that took the life of BYU freshman track star Chelsi Peterson on June 6, the U's Chelsea Shapard and Josefin Berg honored Peterson's memory by donning blue ribbons on their jerseys for the meet.

Phil Steele might have ruffled a bunch of feathers around the college football world, but he'd likely be a welcome guest around almost any dinner table in Utah. Theurer, Wright appointed to Board of Regents

Gov. Jon Huntsman appointed Utah Board of Education member Teresa Theurer and lawyer Joel Wright as new members of the Utah Board of Regents on June 13. They will replace Sara Sinclair and Josh Reid, respectively, who will resign in July. The appointment comes a week after Huntsman declined Theurer's intention to run for a third term on the Utah Board of Education.

U looks to replace outdated utilities

Mike Perez, vice president for administrative services, presented the budget to request funding from the Utah State Legislature for campus infrastructure at the Board of Trustees meeting on June 9. Campus infrastructure, which includes all power, electrical and heating operations and maintenance at the U, experienced multiple failures last year because older systems need to be replaced, said Cory Higgins, director of Plant Operations.

Youth summit at the U helps students work through diversity

More than 170 students attended the 2008 Community of Caring Youth Leadership Summit held at the Heritage Center.
