Letter: Activist’s argument is persuasive

Editor: There are easily a dozen false statements and half-truths in Alicia Williams' editorial ("Animal activists should remember that humans have rights too," May 28). I will highlight three. First, she claims that the U does not violate federal animal welfare laws.

Off-road race to hit Utah mountains

XTERRA will be living up to its extreme, off-road reputation when it kicks off the 2008 XTERRA Utah Trail Series in Eden on Saturday at 8 a.m. This will be the 23rd race of the year on XTERRA's trail run series. The series is made up of 50 events in 16 different states.

U outdoor program to summit Mt. Rainier

The U outdoor recreation department continues its excursion of the Cascade Mountain regions with its next adventure being the most adventurous and difficult. About 14,410 feet of Mount Rainier adventure to be exact. The annual summer trip to the Washington-based Cascades for the outdoor recreation department continues in the Northwest.

U meteorologist aids in 2010 Olympics

Vancouver, Canada, is requesting help from the U for the 2008 Winter Olympics, as the university assisted with Salt Lake City's own Olympics eight years ago. The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Committee needs the U to help with weather forecasting. John Horel, U professor of meteorology, was part of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Weather Support team.

U Real Estate enrollment drops

The U Bureau of Economic and Business Research recently stated that residential construction in Utah is dropping at a record-breaking pace. The Bureau reported a 58.2 percent decline in total residential building permits in Utah last year. James Wood, director of the U's Bureau of Economic and Business Research, said the decline is not an issue that warrants government intervention.

When Rick Pehrson got a phone call from the White House on May 23, he thought his friends were playing a joke. The last thing he expected to hear was that President George W. Bush would arrive in Utah on May 28 and recognize Pehrson for his volunteer service with AmeriCorps Youth Services Corps.

Hundreds of demonstrators packed Washington Square Park on May 28 to let President George W. Bush know that not all Utahns are behind the war in Iraq or his administration. "Let us all, without regard to political partisanship, join together in restoring our democracy, restoring the role of law and restoring our nation's moral standing on history's high road," said former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson as the sun set over a crowd of people ranging from mohawk-sporting punks to stroller-bearing soccer moms.
