U meteorologist aids in 2010 Olympics

Vancouver, Canada, is requesting help from the U for the 2008 Winter Olympics, as the university assisted with Salt Lake City's own Olympics eight years ago. The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Committee needs the U to help with weather forecasting. John Horel, U professor of meteorology, was part of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Weather Support team.

U receives $23 million grant

The U has been awarded a $23 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to organize a new research center. The new center will focus on clinical research and translational research or lab work that could quickly be put into clinical use but is still being worked on for alternate purposes.

Bush honors U alumnus

When Rick Pehrson got a phone call from the White House on May 23, he thought it was his friends playing a joke. The last thing he expected to hear was that President George W. Bush would arrive in Utah on Wednesday and recognize Pehrson for his volunteer service with AmericCorps Youth Service Corps.

Red Rocks score high marks in classroom

For decades, the U gymnastics team has continued to excel in the gym. On Monday, the Red Rocks continued to prove their success in the classroom as well. Seven U gymnasts were named National Association of College Gymnastic Coaches' All-Americans, including seniors Ashley Postell and Katie Kivisto, junior Kristina Baskett, sophomores Daria Bijak, Jamie Deetscreek and Stephanie Neff, and freshman Gael Mackie.

My name might unfortunately be familiar to you. Six weeks ago, I received a letter in my campus mailbox from Dean Robert Newman telling me that my appointment of more than 35 years at the U's Middle East Center was being moved to the Languages Department. The only explanation given was that it had come to the dean's attention that I had "contributed consistently" to creating an atmosphere in the Middle East Center that lacked "collegiality" and could "no longer be tolerated.

House: Recording Industry methods questionable

Downloading music files illegally from the Internet is not a foreign process to many students. However, this practice might come back to haunt 12 U students and employees. The Recording Industry Association of America sent the U a letter May 16 claiming that music was downloaded illegally using the U's Internet service.

Give veterans public forum

Veterans are among our most important and, sometimes, most ignored citizens. The public's lack of attention to their views is condemnable. We need to empower our veterans and current troops by involving more of their words in our national dialogue. If you open any newspaper or turn on the TV, you will get third-party accounts of who the troops are, what they did, how they did it, and what it means to the troops.

Service Learning Scholars complete 10,000 hours of service

The U honored 23 students at commencement on May 2, for completing 10,000 hours of community service as part of the Bennion Center's Service Learning Scholars Program. According to the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center's website, "the Service Learning Scholars Program is an academically challenging program that supports and recognizes University of Utah students in addressing community needs.

Universe Project businesses to be taxed, U says

Stores and restaurants in the proposed development in the Rice-Eccles Stadium parking lot, known as the Universe Project, will not be tax-exempt, U officials said. "Businesses in the development that make a profit will be taxed properly," said U spokeswoman Coralie Alder.
