Graduating at the U: Program helps dropouts return

Karrie Votaw found her "knight in shining armor" when she was 20 years old. "He said I would never have to work another day in my life, and that seemed wonderful to me at that time," she said. Votaw decided to devote her time to family and left the U. After 34 years of raising her children, the mother of three chose to return to school and finish her degree.

Graduating at the U: More grad degrees handed out

The number of graduate students earning their degrees is up by nearly 5 percent since 2003, increasing from about 27 percent in May 2003 to about 31 percent in May 2007. The Colleges of Education and Engineering have seen the largest rise in the number of graduate degrees awarded, proportionate to the number of graduate students enrolled in the college that year.

Softball: Pitcher receives honors

On a cold, gloomy Tuesday afternoon, the U softball team received good news that pitcher Ashley Smuda is taking home MWC Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance last week. She became the second Ute to take home a conference award in as many weeks after Kara Foster earned Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Dancing the night away

Members of the U's Chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars hosted the third annual Senior Ball at the Brighton Gardens retirement home Saturday night. The event provided residents of the assisted living facility with food, dancing and music.

Gymnastics Notebook: Gearing up for nationals

The 2008 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships begin April 24 in Athens, Ga., and Utah will participate as the No. 5 seed. Turning on the after burners Utah plans to heal and rest from now until nationals. With several small injuries, the team plans to push through its final meet despite not feeling 100 percent.

Baseball: Snow day

The U's baseball game against Utah Valley State College scheduled for Tuesday afternoon was canceled because of snow and rain showers in the Salt Lake City area. The cancellation marks the third time this season a U baseball game was either postponed or canceled because of weather, having canceled a game at San Jose, Calif.

Dicou: Could this be the year?

My head is killing me. That's what I get for trying to figure out the complicated Sudoku puzzle known as "Whom will the Jazz face when the playoffs start this weekend?" Equally puzzling, "Will they have home-court advantage?" There are so many "if this happens, then this" scenarios, and to be honest, it's all making my head spin.

Bateman: A skybridge to nowhere

Alaska's proposed $398 million bridge linking Ketchikan and Gravina Island was infamously labeled as the "bridge to nowhere." Today, it is invoked to demonstrate the controversial problems of Congressional pork-barrel spending and earmarks. Alaska isn't alone in bridge controversy.
