Lone party sweeps RHA elections

By and April 4, 2008
The only candidates running for Residence Halls Association president and vice president won the election by a landslide. Melissa Simpson, RHA president elect, and Clint Hugie, vice president elect, will begin their term at the end of April 2008 at an inauguration ceremony.

Generator to supply clean energy

By and April 4, 2008
Thanks to a new heating and electricity generator, the U will be more environmentally friendly after this month. A new steam co-generation system will supply more than 10 percent of the U's electricity needs and produce heat for most of lower campus. "It's not only a more energy-efficient system, but it will eventually pay for itself in energy savings," said Stephen Laraway, manager of the co-generation project.

Gymnastics: Bijak battles with perfection

By By Jon Gilbert and By Jon Gilbert April 4, 2008
Perfection is distinguished by a score of 10.0 in college gymnastics. For Daria Bijak, those digits have yet to show on a scorecard in her time at Utah. She thinks the reason for that might be because she is trying too hard to achieve perfection. Bijak's relentless quest for that perfection was evident in Utah's final regular season meet against BYU on March 28.

Letter: Racial equality has not been achieved

By and April 4, 2008
Editor: I would like to comment on Tiara C. Auxier's piece on Barack Obama's relationship with the Rev. Wright ("Barack can't hide it," April 2). Let's assume that in fact Wright actually hates white people and that he also hates America. It still does not excuse the comment made by Auxier that "Wright should be falling to his knees and thanking God he lives in America, the greatest nation in the world," which was followed up a few lines later with "nowhere else in the world have black people been blessed with so many freedoms and opportunities for success.

Baseball: Pitching saves Utes’ win

By By Cody Brunner and By Cody Brunner April 4, 2008
The U baseball team has seen numerous late leads slip away this season, so when Utah Valley State was trailing 4-3 late on Thursday night, the tension in the air at Franklin Covey Field was palpable. How did Utah relieving pitcher Robert Chimpky respond to the situation in the top of the ninth inning? One, two, three.

RSL: Looking to get that warm, fuzzy feeling from Chivas

By By Chris Kamrani and By Chris Kamrani April 4, 2008
Twenty-eight seconds. That's the amount of time it took for Chivas USA to start the obliteration of Real Salt Lake in their first away match last year. Now, RSL (0-0-1) look to finally conquer their expansion brother-in-arms Chivas (0-0-1). The latter has been the better of the two teams since its induction into the MLS four seasons ago.

Softball: Utes split doubleheader with a gnarly Rams squad

By By Jason Peterson and By Jason Peterson April 4, 2008
Going into Thursday's doubleheader against Colorado State, the U softball team felt quite confident that it could start conference play 2-0. After getting an up close and all-too-personal look at the Rams (20-12) though, the Utes may be feeling fortunate about splitting the pair at Ute Softball Field.

Chronicle’s view: Dean Newman has decimated one of U’s top programs

By and April 4, 2008
The Middle East Center at the U has come to be regarded as one of the best such centers in the nation -- a recognition earned by the hard work of exemplary department professors, and Ibrahim Karawan, the center's director. The recent forced removal of two professors from the center has left the program short of two great minds and has spurred the departure of Karawan.

Letter: Jokes aside, U program provides clean energy opportunity

By and April 4, 2008
Editor: Congratulations on your April 1 issue and on spoofing at least one respondent with the "U gives up on sustainability" article. Despite not being in on the prank, I am happy to have been "quoted" as saying that climate change is "just a theory". That's correct, just like the theories of gravity, evolution, that elements are comprised of atoms, and that HIV causes AIDS.

Shine a Light’ sounds, looks and feels real

By By Sam Potter and By Sam Potter April 3, 2008
Who better to direct a concert movie about The Rolling Stones than Martin Scorsese? Not only has the acclaimed director made some of the most celebrated music films in history ("The Last Waltz" with The Band and "No Direction Home" with Bob Dylan), he has employed tunes from the Stones' lexicon since his earliest work.
