A day of silence to end silence

By By Adam Fifield and By Adam Fifield April 3, 2008
Silence is a hard thing to come by on the U campus. Even at the Marriott Library, students find it hard to study because background noise such as constant typing at the computer lab, people flipping through books and students scrawling notes on paper are amplified more and more the quieter the surrounding area is.

The Word (4/3): Chronicle’s guide to the SLC music scene

By By Makena Walsh and By Makena Walsh April 3, 2008
April 3 Daniel Johnston $15 7 p.m. In the Venue (579 West 200 South) The Sundance Film Festival's 2005 Directors Award went to Jeff Feuerzeig for his documentary on tragic indie icon Daniel Johnston. "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" portrays the musician as a self-educated and as yet unsung musical icon who has been crafting his Beatles-styled ballads since the late '70s with only a Sanyo Boombox as a recording studio.

Utah Symphony hosts American Virtuoso

By By Christie Franke and By Christie Franke April 3, 2008
The Utah Symphony is doing it again: hosting an awesome violinist for a show, that is. James Ehnes, an American virtuoso, will be performing Felix Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto and Overture to Ruy Blas" as well as Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending" and "Symphony No.

Axis of Evil

By By Trevor Hale and By Trevor Hale April 3, 2008
Steve Austin (not the WWE wrestler) has been a prominent force in the metal and hardcore scene for well over 15 years now. He's lent his knowledge, talent and unique musical vision to numerous up-and-coming bands, producing albums for acts as diverse as Lamb of God, Converge, Bane and The Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra.

Five reasons to get off your couch (4/3)

By and April 3, 2008
Fri., April 4, and Sat., April 5 Tower Theatre Midnight Movie: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" Free 12 a.m. Tower Theatre (876 E. 900 South) Alright all you key-demographic, Salt Lake suburb-living, Mayflower-lineaged, melanin-deficient, humanities-majoring U undergrads (which admittedly includes many-a Redux staff member), it's time to take a good look in the proverbial mirror.

The Drop (4/3): Chronicle’s guide for the music store

By and April 3, 2008
Gothenburg, Sweden's In Flames bore the torches of the melodic metal sound. If it weren't for early albums such as The Jester Race and Whoracle, the works of fellow Europeans Carcass and At The Gates, modern metallers Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Bleeding Through would still be under-the-radar hardcore acts.

Joining forces

By and April 3, 2008
There's an obvious disconnect between the ballet and modern dance departments: Ballet majors rule the basement floor of the Marriott Center for Dance, and modern students own the top level. They all eat, sleep and breathe dance under a single roof but aren't given an outlet to join their respective talents.

Sewell: Don’t hate on the intellects

By By James Sewell and By James Sewell April 3, 2008
Much has been written in the past couple of years about the decline of reading as a hobby for many Americans and the overall aversion to intellectualism that has infected our culture. Some critics decry this trend while more skeptical folks such as myself wonder whether 'tis much ado about nothing.

Shine a Light’ sounds, looks and feels real

By By Sam Potter and By Sam Potter April 3, 2008
Who better to direct a concert movie about The Rolling Stones than Martin Scorsese? Not only has the acclaimed director made some of the most celebrated music films in history ("The Last Waltz" with The Band and "No Direction Home" with Bob Dylan), he has employed tunes from the Stones' lexicon since his earliest work.

Campus after dark: Architecture students work late nights

By and April 2, 2008
David Costanza stayed awake for 68 hours straight last semester working on projects for his architecture class. Costanza, a first-year architecture student at the U, said that for students in the College of Architecture and Planning, Finals Week is really finals month, and students take 15-minute naps in the architecture building on campus instead of going home to sleep.
