Plans for mixed-use development in the works

Students might be able to step off of TRAX at Rice-Eccles Stadium to a new multi-use development of retail stores, restaurants, offices and university housing, if plans for the "Universe Project," part of the U's Campus Master Plan, move forward. "When people get off TRAX, they trudge along a sea of black asphalt -- it's not very inviting," said Mike Perez, associate vice president for facilities management.

Campus after dark: Custodian finds solitude during shift

Larry Anderson pulled a razor blade from his pocket and scraped a piece of gum off the floor. You can tell a lot about people by the way they keep the buildings they occupy, said Anderson, a nighttime custodian for OSH. For the past four months, Anderson has been on staff in OSH cleaning the floors, classrooms and bathrooms on the second floor of the building.

Early planning has begun for the "Universe Project," a part of the U's Campus Master Plan which would call for the development of a structure that would house retail, restaurant, office and housing space at the west end of the Rice-Eccles Stadium parking lot.

Parties criticize pricey election

The victorious Focus Party spent roughly $2,000 more than the Spork Party during this year's student government elections. However, members from both parties think money should play a lesser role in the contest. As of the final financial disclosure deadline, the Focus Party was able to generate almost $9,900 in donations, while Spork raised $7,702.

Golf: Pimm joining to the Canadian Tour

The Puttin' Utes lost their best player, Dustin Pimm, to the Canadian Tour. Pimm recently took part in the Canadian Tour Qualifying Event in hopes of earning a spot on the tour. In his first attempt, Pimm carded scores of 69, 66, 80 and 72. Pimm elected to accept the invitation to join the tour and is now officially a professional golfer, giving up his eligibility to play for Utah.

Baseball: Four games in four days

The Utah baseball team's chances of righting the ship and leveling itself at .500 won't get easier. Carrying a 10-12 overall record on the season, Utah will face four games on four consecutive days against a paltry Utah Valley State College team (4-17-1).

Why, with months of media scrutiny grilling Mitt Romney about things that happened in the LDS church 100 years ago, didn't the media spend as much time digging into Obama's close ties to a present-day pastor who spews hate-speech every Sunday and why Obama sat in his pew listening to his racist rants against "white America" for 20 years? Obama attempted to distance himself while not disowning Wright in a speech attempting to rescue his campaign from the public backlash.

Gymnastics: Red Rocks head to Minnesota as No. 1 seed

The Utah gymnastics team received a bid to the North Central Region Championship as the top seed Monday. The North Central Region will be held April 12 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. All six regions were assigned six of the top 36 teams in the nation.

Campus after dark: Architecture students work late nights

David Costanza stayed awake for 68 hours straight last semester working on projects for his architecture class. Costanza, a first-year architecture student at the U, said that for students in the College of Architecture and Planning, Finals Week is really finals month, and students take 15-minute naps in the architecture building on campus instead of going home to sleep.

It's almost 11 p.m. on Monday in the University Hospital waiting room, and things seem to be quieting down. Suddenly, a woman who was wheeled into to the waiting area starts to have a seizure. Staff members put down what they are doing and urgently rush to assist her.
