Student remembers history through art

By By Jaime Winston March 10, 2008
It all started when her boyfriend's cat passed away. Whitney Shaw, a senior in graphic design, wanted to keep Snowy Owl's memory alive, so she painted the cat's image onto a piece of wood. "It was a very little painting on a piece of wood, which I had asked my boyfriend to cut down for me when (the cat) was sick," Shaw said.

Straight: Make sure to vote in the ASUU elections

By By Chase Straight March 10, 2008
The Associated Students of the University of Utah elections are just around the corner, and most students don't really give a damn. To be fair, the campaigns I've seen in my time at this university haven't warranted a second glance (not to mention that hardly anyone outside of ASUU actually knows what ASUU does).

Marbling master visits the U

By By Andrew Cone March 10, 2008
Artistic magician Galen Berry dropped by the U last week to show students and artists from all over Utah how to create intricate designs and patterns using an ancient technique called marbling. The art of marbling involves the sprinkling of ink or paint onto a surface of water mixed with carrageenan, a gelatin-like substance usually used as a food additive, which is then stirred with different instruments to form patterns that look like stone and can later be transferred to cloth or paper.

Physicist says time, gravity could be changing

By By Dan Treasure March 10, 2008
The fundamental constants such as gravity and time are changing, according to 14th Astronomer Royal, Sir Arnold Wolfendale, who spoke at the Aline Wilmot Skaggs Biology Building Auditorium last week. Citing such sources as physicist Paul Dirac, Wolfendale said there are striking similarities to the ratios of scientific constants and how big the universe is.

By By Cody Brunner March 10, 2008
For some former U football players, today is as close as they will ever get to a career in the NFL. For others, today is a platform that could potentially spring them toward achieving their dreams. The U's Pro Day is upon us, and there are a plethora of athletes from the U who are going to try to boost their draft stock by participating in different drills in front of NFL scouts.

Gymnastics: DiLuzio inspires team

March 10, 2008
Brightness has the tendency to stand out a little more when set against a dark background. Such was the case in the Huntsman Center Friday night as numerous falls and miscues cast a somewhat dingy backdrop upon the U gymnastic team's win over No. 7 Oregon State.

ASUU posters missing, vandalized

By By Michael McFall March 10, 2008
Hundreds of posters for candidates competing in upcoming student government elections have either disappeared or been defaced with mustaches or crude imagery. Members of the Spork Party say as many as 200 to 300 of their 700 posters have disappeared. Tim Vogeler, one of Spork's campaign managers, said some of the party's posters in the Francis Armstrong Madsen Building are gone and have been replaced with posters for the rival Focus Party.

Utes obtain perfection

By By Natalie Dicou and By Natalie Dicou March 9, 2008
Only UNLV stood between the U women's basketball team and an undefeated Mountain West Conference season, although the Rebels didn't set up any big hurdles. The No. 15 Utes (27-3, 16-0 MWC) started the game out at an electrifying pace and ran right over UNLV (8-20, 4-11 MWC) early in the contest after jumping out to a 21-4 lead.

Women’s Hoops: One and done for undefeated conference season

By By Natalie Dicou and By Natalie Dicou March 9, 2008
Before the game, Wednesday's matchup between the Colorado State and Utah women's basketball teams seemed pointless. After all, Elaine Elliott's bunch went into Fort Collins, Colo., with a pristine 14-0 record while the Rams were sitting in the conference gutter at 0-14.
